«Tlt;raitg Grifl'u ” and Thomas MuLftn^ilin Attack Two Ofllfit'Mi .Chicago, Jan. 12.—Policemen Daniel j Coughlin and James Bresnahan had a pitched battle In front of the Clover Leaf saloon in State street, with two pugilists, early in the morning. The officers were roughly handled, but sue-ceeded in taking their prisoners to the Harrison street station. The pugilists were Alfred Griffiths, better known as “Young Criffo,” and Thomas McLaughlin. who Is said to be a fighter of some note.The officers were in uni Cor in when they were met by the prise fighters. During the progress •of the fight which followed a crowd collected and cheered the pugilists, telling them to whip the policemen. Seeing the excitement, a number of brother officers hurried to the 3cenc and assisted In placing the fighters under arrest. At the police sta-tlon McLaughlin was found to be suffering from a wound on the back of his head, which ho had received during the encounter. He was taken to the county jah hospital. The clothing of noth policemen was torn In several places.
