January 12. 1994SPORTSLINE9angBy Nick BarnardInjuries played a major part in the Shafter High School Lady Colonels’ 19-9 loss at home last week to tl»e Tulare Western Mustangs.Shafter’s Amber Anderson collected her first steal of the game following the Mustangs’ opening possession from the Up-off.The Colonels allowed only one score from the Mustangs. That came late in the first period while Becky Chewning made a pair of free throws, combined with one from Karina Ochoa.After Tulare Western scored another basket to take the lead, Beth Zachary scored and was fouled.She then added another point from the charity stripe to complete the 3-pointpiay.Chewning added another free throw and by the half, a defensive battle wlt;as well defined with Shafter leading 7-4.The Mustangs came from the halfand put 8 points on the board in the third quarter.Shafter’s sole response was a basket by Chewning, assisted by Anderson who previously got a rebound.Entering the fourth quarter, the Colonels trailed by three --12- 9.With 6:05 remaining, Chewming left the game with an ankle injury, which sidelined her for tLe league opening, and possibly longer.Shafter’s attack seemed todwindle.Losing your point guard in basketball is comparable to losing your quarterback in football, and the Mustangs’ defense had been tough to score against without the loss of Chewning.The Mustangs’ 3-point shooting got hot and from there they rapped it up.Despite missing most of the fourth quarter, Chewning led the Colonels with 5 points.Anderson led with 7 rebounds, Chewning added 5 and Zachary 4 more.Zachary led with 5 steals and Anderson and Chewning each had 5.Shafter at TrhachapiThe next contest for the Ladies was their league opener with the Lady Braves Friday in Tehachapi.Minus Chewning and Deedra Cobb, both out w ith injuries. Shafter found the clock to be their primary opposition at the end of the game.Tehachapi edged Shafter 22-20.Shafter seemed to be outrebounded early in the contest, butheld defensively until 3:53 had expired in the first period when Tehachapi scored their first basket.Karina Ochoa and Zachary each had baskets in the first, but by the beginning of the second, the Colonels trailed 6-4.Before half-time, Zachary scored again along with Lisa Ortiz and trailed 10-8.The Colonels had many of their;VaV.-V-.' *L* V ’ ;«• . Anderson grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast to coast for 2 giving Shafter the lead in the beginning of the fourth penod.The Braves responded with 2 of their own. Then. Quinta Lyons assisted Petra Castellon (the replacement for Chewning) for 2 w ith 4:00 left.Tehachapi again responded with 2.With :44 remaining, Castellon made a rebound and assisted Ortiz for 2 to make the score 21 -20 in favor of the Braves.Tehachapi added a free throw w ith :20 left making the score 22- 20. With under 10 seconds remaining in the game, Shafter worked the ball dow n the court and put it up.The shot missed, but Lyonsgrabbed the rebound and put it in fortwo.However, the officials ruled no basket as the buzzer went off and lime had expired.Ortiz led the Colonels with 10points. Anderson led with 7 rebounds. Ortiz had 6 and Zachary and Castellon had 5 each.Zachary led with 6 steals, Ortiz had 5 and Anderson 4.
