UW might play game in TokyoMADISON, Wis. (AP) - The University of Wisconsin is negotiating to play its 1993 home game with Michigan State in Japan’s 50,000-seat Tokyo Dome.UW associate athletic director Joel Maturi, who traveled to Tokyo in early December on a five-day fact-finding mission for the football program, said a contract hasn’t been signed.But Maturi, who was accompanied by John Chadima, the administrative assistant to UW head coach Barry Alvarez, said it would take “a major discrepancy for it not to happen.” “Logistically, we wanted to see what was needed for our planning,” Maturi said. “Secondly, we visited with the major sponsors to iron out any conflicts with the contract.”Representatives of other conferences have taken part in the annual exchange, but the Badgers and the Spartans would be the first Big Ten schools to play in the Orient, he said.While there are drawbacks to the trip — lost revenue for the Madison business community, lost class time and loss of the home-field advantage — Maturi said there are many advantages as well.Those include recruiting and the players’ exposure to a different culture through small group touring, sightseeing and dining with Japanese hosts, h£ said. *“I was told that we have more alumni in Japan than any other Big Ten school,” Maturi said. “And we have plan to take advantage of the experience.” *He said the players would be pre^ pared for the experience and — whether it’s a credit or noncredit situation would be educated before leaving campus so they would have a better appreciation for the trip. *
