Surprising Rockets throttle WarriorsBy DAN ARENDTRich East traveled to the home of the Warriors Tuesday and soundly thumped Crete-Monee by a whopping 51-33 score The win could very well turn out to be a pivotal point in Rich East’s SICA South hopes.Presently, Larry Katterheinrich’s club is 2-1 in conference play. Also, the Rockets now can boast of a modest two-game win streak. All this boils down to the fact that the Rockets control their own destiny.Their next three contests include the top two clubs in the conference. Victories over Kankakee and Bradley and the conference title will be up for grabs. In addition, a Saturday Galaxy tournament decision over TF North and Rich East will find itself in the hunt for the consolation crown Conversely, Crete-Monee plumet-ted to 6-8 on the campaign and 0-3 in conference. “We stopped movingafter the first quarter, said Warrior coach Debbie Durso.“Maybe we have learned how to win. said a pleased Katterheinrich. “Tonight, a combination of our press and a big boost from our bench turned the tables.” At tipoff, this game appeared even.As a matter of fact, the first quarter found Crete-Monee ahead by a slim 14-12 margin. At the outset, the Warriors got a combination of six inside points from Cathy Phason and six outside tallies from guard Ebonie Kelley (10 points, three assists, three steals). The Rockets’ 2-3 zone was being busted.Wisely, Katterheinrich inserted a 1-3-1 zone at halfcourt and a 2-2-1 press on the inlet pass. A remarkable turn of events transpired. The once hot Phason (14 points, 12 rebounds, three blocked shots) turned frigid. A combination of beingfronted and backed by the defense and a poor selection of shots found Phason miss her next 15 attempts from the field. Not only was Phason falling apart, but the Warrior ballhandlers struggled as well. In the second quarter, the invincible Rocket press netted 11 turnovers As a result. Crete-Monee only managed to score five second-quarter points. With the ball in their hands, the Rockets attacked furiously. Repeatedly. they got the ball to forward Shalonda Byers Before the dust settled, Byers scored a game-high 17 points and snared 12 rebounds “Impressive on the inside and boards for a freshman, praised Katterheinrich By intermission. Rich East had opened a 26-19 bulge that it would never relinquishWith only 2:28 gone in the third frame. Rich East center Cherie Pal-fenier (eight points, nine rebounds)picked up her fourth personal foul and went to the bench Instead of the Rockets' missing a beat, Palfenier's replacement, junior Carmaine Means, picked up the slack By the quarter's finish. Rich East stood ahead at 32-25 Once again in the fourth quarter, the press broke the game wide open The guard tandem of reserve Michelle Cruz (nine points) and starter Jenny Murphy (eight) were the catalystsWCM CAST 51.
