JEFFRIES-RHULIN.It is Probable Tliat the Championship Contest Will Not Take Place in Cincinnati.BUY BE DECLARED OFF IN A FEW HOURSUnder the Ohio Statutes it is Claimed That the Figrht Would Be Held as a Felouy. The Real Element Agalnitt Having the Exhibition in the lt;iueen City ]m Generally CouMltlered to Be Polities.Cincinnati, Jan. 11.—The Jeffries-Ruhlin tight 011 February 15 has not yet been declared off by the Saen-gerfest Athletic association, of Cincinnati, notwithstanding reports to the contrary. But more formidable opposition than ever heretofore developed Thursday against having the ligJit- pulled off in Cincinnati. The directors of the Saengerfest ^thletic association were in session j from .10 a. in. uutil 1 p. m., and after 1 adjournment announced that they had not considered the question of declaring the light off.Director** Make u Statement. The directors met again at 4 p. m. with their attorneys, and at 5 p. m. handed out to members of the press, who were awaiting the result of their action, the following statement, which is said to have been prepared by legal counsel and unanimously adopted by the directors:“In relation to the proposed contest announced for February 15, the board of directors authorized the following statement:“After a session with their counsel they have not changed their position ; one iota, and any announcement that r! the contest is off is in no way authorized.”Consulting' Their Attorneys.Late Thursday night the sentiment seemed stronger than ever that the fight will not come off here and that it may be declared off within the next 'J4 hours. While the directors of the Saengevfest Athletic club were not in session Thursday night, some of them were 'with their attorneys, and their opponents were also engaged with counsel. Under the Ohio statutes it is claimed that the contest would be held to be a felony, and even if it was only a sparring match, that it could not be given under the auspices of the Saengerfest Athletic club, which was organized for the purpose of pulling off this fight only, and which is not a standing organization fur the development of athletics, etc.Can \ot Inmie a Permit. But, while counsel for the directors and for the various organizations op-jl posing them are rendering opinions . on the statutes and on the decisions of the supreme court, the real element that is generally considered as the one against having the fight here is political, and it includes such lead-ers as have seldom taken fiart in such controversies. There was much gossip on t lie street Thursday night about pleadings from these leaders to Mayor J^leischinann, and the sporting fraternity is offering odds that the fight will be declared off, and even that Mayor Fleisehmann will not issue his permit, on the ground that he can not legally do so under the advice of counsel. The mayor made his promise without consulting the corporation counsel or other attorneys.
