CWA wrestling coming to CorbinFive match event setBy CHERYL MEADOWSLifestyles EditorCORBIN — Even Jody theBouncer won’t be able to stop the fighting that’s being planned at The Music Place next Thursday.It’ll take place on the dance floor, and even the owners are in on it. ... ,rContinental Wrestling Associa -tion of Knoxville, Tenn. will bring its brand of wrestling to the area Jan. 16 for five matches to be held at the local entertainment center located at the comer of Fifth Street and Cumberland Falls Road. ,The five-year-old company, which presents wrestling events in Kentucky. Tennessee, Virginia and more, nas selected Corbin as its next site and is gearing up for the show.CWA Vice-President Mike Samples was in town earlier thisweek and took a few minutes to explain what's in store for those who attend the initial event.The l'/i to two-hour 7:30 p.m. show will be composed of five matches, including one tag team match, all performed by professionals. according to Samples.A total of 10-12 wrestlers will be on hand including Rip Rogers. Ironman Mike Woody. TTie Texas Hangman. Mountain Man Miller and Exotic Eric. The Devil's Duo and rhe California Dudes will combine for a tag team match.Some of these wrestlers were once part of the ICU wrestling company based in Lexington. This company was owned by former WWF wrestler, now multimillionaire, Randy Savage.Samples said bringing CWA wrestling to Corbin has been a long-term goal of his.“I've been wanting to come here (Corbin) for some time, but was Just waiting on the right place” to hold the event, he explained.“Over the years, wrestling has done very well in this area and I knew this would be a good location.Corbin’s location, near the Kentucky/Tennessee border, makes it doubly nice, because most of the wrestlers set to perform are from the region, thepromoter said.While searching for a site. Samples says he happened upon The Music Place by accident and talked to the owners.Owners Leland and Pat Felts were open to the idea and decided to give it a try, according to Mrs. Felts.“They came and asked us ... they said they needed a place and we thought it would be good, she said. “Most people like wrestling around here. We hope it’ll go across good.The ring will be set up on the dance floor with seating surrounding it. With the ring set up, the center will hold as many as 400 people, Mrs. Felts added.If this event goes over well, the Felts and CWA agree that this will be the first of at least three wres-tl ing matches. over a th ree - month period here.And if it’s as successful as Samples believes it will be, future matches will feature some more well-known wrestlers including Bill Dundee and Pez Whatley, hesaid.A former WCW wrestler himself, Samples says wrestling is the combination of entertainment and sport. “You have to be a good athlete to take the injuries that are part of it. he explained. “But it has too be entertaining too. or the audience members would bebored.Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12.Tickets are on sale at The Music Place and at the Corbin PawnShop.The Music Place is open 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights offering live music anddancing.Wrestling events also take place at Sammy's Auction House on the Cumberland Gap Parkway from time to time.
