SEARCH: Nationwide hunt begins todayContinued from Page C-1on in a Division I program,” Poole said. “We’re also looking for someone with a well-rounded background who can help us move the entire program to the next level.”Poole said that in addition to posting the job in state and national publications and Web sites, he will be taking the job description with him to the NCAA Convention, which begins later this week in Indianapolis. He will be forming a search committee to screen applicants within the next few weeks to screen the applicants and narrow down the field. The application deadline is March 8.“We want to get a good cross-section of people from throughout the community on the committee,” he said.Poole said that the recent moves made by Lind, which include moving department oversight from the Dean of Student Services to the chancellor demonstrates the university’s dedication to taking the department to the next level.“When the chancellor made the decision to put the department under his control, I think the commitment was made to do what we canwith the resources that are available,” Poole said. While Poole didn’t get into the specifics of funding, he did acknowledge that the department has a budget of more than $3 million and he was excited about what can be accomplished in the future.“Our sports teams and student athletes have done extremely well in the past couple of years,” Poole said. “We have programs that can easily become nationally competitive and we have coaches who can bring the players to that level.“Now it’s time to bring in some newr blood, new ideas and new thoughts and take it to the next level,” he added. In addition to the athletic director position, UAF has several other openings in the department. Associate athletic directors Karen Jones and Rick Goeb left the department last summer and sports information director Tori Tragis vacated her position in mid-November.Associate athletic director Kip Harmon currently is the only administrator remaining in the department with more than a year’s administrative background.Kevin Raap, who was filling in for Goeb on an interim basis, will take over the sports information department for the remainder of the year with assistance from Lindsay Du-tertre.Raap and Harmon will share the duties that fell under Goeb’s job description and volleyball coach Phil Shoemaker will help out with day-to-day operations until a new athletic director is in place.Poole said that he hopes to have a business manager (Jones’ former position) by the end of the month.“We have a budget of more than $3 million and we need to have someone with a business sense in charge of it,” he said. “We’re in the final stages of deciding on the job description and we’re going to get that person up and running as soon as possible, hopefully by the end of the month.“Having that person in place will take some of the load off Kip, Kevin and the coaches,” he added. “Our coaches shouldn’t have to be worrying about business stuff. We want the coaches to be coaches.”
