Sam Harret News-M inerNEXT STEP—University of Alaska Fairbanks Special Assistant to the Chancelor for Athletics Jake Poole, left, answers questions during a press conference to announce the start of the search for an athletic director and that Kevin Raap, riqht, will be the interim sports information director.UAF begins search for athletic directorBy BOB ELEYSports EditorThe University of Alaska Fairbanks launched its search for a new athletic director today when it posted the vacant position onthe NCAA Web site and in various other publications throughout Alaska and the nation.“Our goal is to have the new athletic director in place by July 1,” Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Athletics Jake Poole told a small gathering of Fairbanks media members onMonday afternoon at the Nanook Lounge in the Patty Center.“Obviously that will depend on a number of circumstances, but the target coincides with the Fiscal year and gives the newperson the summer to get settled in before the sports year begii£ .”The new athletic director will take over for Poole, who was placed in charge of the department by Chancellor Marshall Lind in December after Lind decided to reassign athletic director Randy Pitney as a special assistant to Dean of Student Services Carla Kirts.Poole said the university is looking for someone with the experience of running a department similar to UAF’s, which includes an NCAA Division I hockey program along with Division II programs in men’s and women’sbasketball, women’s volleyball,cross country running and skiing and rifle.
