Quick-starting Titans throttle Crete-MoneeBy PHIL FAVORITEOnce-beaten Tinley Park Thursday tuned up for this Thursday’s key conference game at Oak Forest by convincingly stretching its winning streak to 14 games, 63-41 at Crete-Monee in girls basketball.Actually, the 15-1 Titans still have another tuneup Tuesday at TF SouthGirls cagebefore their Hillcrest Classic title game rematch with the rival Ben-gals.Working without starting forward Alison Jurges, who is temporarily sidelined with an abdominal muscle strain, Tinley jumped all over the host Warriors (5-6) early on, and never looked back.Forward Beth Conley finished with 22 points to lead the Titans. Game scoring honors went to Crete-Monee’s Cathy Phason with 25.“I’m very well pleased with the play of Beth Conley,” said Tinley Park coach Jay Lundy after watching Conley team with the steady Keri Lorenzen in dominating both ends of the floor. “She did a super job for us tonight. It was Lorenzen who sparked Tinley to its early, insurmountable lead. The senior center controlled the defensive glass and scored two early hoops while the the Lady Titans jumped out to a 15-2 advantage in the games first six minutes. She then scored three field goals in the final minute of the first quarter to give her team a 21-4 lead.“I think she was really the only one giving us trouble.” Crete-Monee coach Debbie Durso said of Lorenzen. “She didn’t even have to jump. She dwarfed our center ”During the second quarter, Conley, who had four points at the start, continued to contribute offensively. Her three-point play with 2:09 left in the half kept Tinley in control, 31-13.The third quarter saw more of the same, with Lorenzen and Conley having their way inside while teammates Lolita Gill, Kathy Nolan and Robin Budz hounded the Crete-Monee guards into turnovers.Budz found Gill open underneath on a pretty baseline feed for a three-point play that put Tinley ahead, 42-17, and Conley and Lorenzen followed to give the Lady Titans their biggest lead at 46-17 with 3:22 left in the third. With the game firmly in hand, Lundy lifted most of his starters for the fourth quarter. It was then that • Crete’s Phason began to take control. She scored 15 points in the final quarter, including a 3-point field goal that trimmed her team’s deficit to 20 points. But Phason’s efforts were too little and too late.“I know she’s not used to being the star, Durso said, “and I think sometimes she’s intimidated by that.“You can’t leave her open,” Lundy said of Phason. “She’s kill you. She’s a good ball player.”The Titans’ Conley continued to play and score in the fourth quarter, and late baskets by Tammy Morgan, Patti Van Kuiken and Joy O’Donnell sealed the victory for Tinley.TINLEY PARK *3 CRETE MONEE 41 TINLEY PARK (*3— Nolan 0-2-2, Gill 2-2-0.
