Tiny Riverdale bests big boysRiverdale High School, a Class C school from southwestern Wisconsin, traveled to Janesville Saturday and put on a fine display of wrestling at the Janesville Craig Invitational.The Chieftains won the invitational team title with 169 points. Johnsburg was second with 147 and Janesville Parker was third with 14D4.Rounding out the team scores were Beloit Memorial, 113; Elk-horn, 68^; host Janesville Craig and Milton, 61 each; Beloit Turner, 55Vi, and Cambridge 9.Riverdale finished third in Class C in the 1987-88 W1AA state tournament last spring and used three first- and three second-place finishes to boost itself to the top.Parker wrestlers earned two first-place finishes and one second while finishing third.Phounsin Phoulavan raised his season record to 14-2 while winning the 145-pound weight class championship. Phoulavan defeated Jim Roring of Johnsburg,10-7, in overtime, in the title match.The Vikings’ Tom Gonzalez followed that up by winning the 160-pound weight class title with an11-0 decision over Elkhom’s Scott French in the championship match. Gonzalez now is 15-2 on the season.Eric Champion of Parker was second in the 103-pound weight class as he lost to Chris Setzler of Johnsburg, 6-0, in the title match.Parker also received third-place finishes from Adam Griffin (125), Tony Tompkins (135), Shawn Richards (140), Mike Starks (152) and Dan Thomas (171).High individual finishers were a pair of third-place finishes by Jeff Farrell at 130 and Jim Fullerton at 145.Beloit Turner’s Shawn Nicholson led the list of area finishers as he raised his season record to 13-0 by winning the 171-pound title with a narrow 9-8 win over John Troxel of Riverdale. Nicholson trailed, 8-7, but turned a reversal with just three seconds left in the match to gain the victory.Elkhom wrestlers captured two individual titles.In the 152-pound weight class, Mike Biba raised his season mark to 14-3 with a 6-4 win over Beloit Memorial’s Ken Jones in the title match.The Elks’ Doug Berg then won the 275-pound weight class championship by pinning Riverdale’s Sham use Prindiville in just 58 seconds to raise his season mark to 13-1.Chris Whitt of Beloit Memorial was the Purple Knights’ top individual finisher as he captured the 189-pound weight class title by edging Johnsburg’s Dennis Linn, 7-6, in the championship match.
