The Hornets are 8-1 over-all.Fond du Lac, which had won six of seven games before Friday's defeat,.is now 4-2 in Valley play and 6-4 over-all.Preble coach Keith Wall, whose team dumped Manitowoc Tuesday for its first victory there, was elated bythis triumph.“We had lost 20 straight games to Fond du Lac,’* he said. “Now, we really haveMIKE CASPERa monkey off our backs. This week, we’ve had two very big psychological barriers to get past. The kids hung together, they really rallied together. We believed In our style of play.“Considering that we played without Wahlers or Mosbrucker, this is unbelievable,” he added.Wahlers was injured in, a victory at Neenah Dec. 28, and has his ankle in a cast. Thecast won’t be removed for twoweeks, and he won’t be ready to play for three weeks. Mosbrucker suffered a chest injury against Manitowoc, and should be able to play next week.Fond du Lac coach Dave Bartolutti was understandablydisappointed in the outcome.“I don't want fo say we choked,” he said, “but this wasour first shot In a battle for /contention (in the Valley), and 1 it was a sign of tension that we didn’t play well. We definitely can play better than this, and I thisK we will.“Don't forget,”' Bartolutti added, “that Preble was playing without -its two best players. They are a real tough outfit, and they have got allthe makings* of a nice club. A couple of their kids killed us who shouldn’t have — (Greg) Verbeten and (Mark) Snyder.“We knew Scott Krause was very tough from the outside and Brad Buckoski from the inside, but we didn’t figure on the other two.”Snyder, the brother of Mike Snyder, who starred for Preble last season, led the Hornets with 19 points, while Verbeten, a 6-1 senior who played bis first two years at St. Mary’sSprings before transferring to Preble, scored 14 point*, including six in a 10-point spree in the first quarter In which Preble stretched an U-8 lead to 21-9 and, in effect, won the game.The Hornets led, 21-11, after one quarter, and 35-22 at hatftime. Preble made 12 of 18 free throws.Preble had a 29-28 edge inrebounds, while Fond du Lac . committed 18 turnovers to-14 for the Hornets.
