Those are the types of mistakes the Martinsville Bulldogs made Friday night. And Martinsville's mistakes were extremely costly because the Morehead Panthers quickly took advantage of them and won an 84-72 victory over the Bulldogs.Whenever Martinsville attempted a long pass, a More-head player darted to intercept it. When the Bulldogs attempted to dribble, a Panther oftentimes managad to steal the ball. And nearly every time Martinsville made a mistake, Morehead converted it into a fast break, scoring numerous easy layups and short jump shots.All five members of the Panthers’ starting lineup had at least ten points, as Morehead’s fast break operated with perfection. Johnny Carter was the game’s high scorer with 23, while Gene Luna added 18. Freddie Richardson and Bo Robertson had 12 each, and Joe Chandler contributed ten. Guard Andy Beckner led the Bulldogs with 14.Martinsville jumped into a n early 6-2 lead in the first quarter as Mike Barrows hit a 15-foot jump shot and a layup and Jerry Oakes scored a goal after stealing the ball. However Morehead came back and went ahead 9-8 on a short jumper from the side by Freddie Richardson. Martinsville never had the lead again.The Bulldogs were down by as much as 15 in the second quarter but rallied toward the end of the period to cut the Panther advantage to seven at half-time. However Morehead out-scored Martinsville twelve t o two in the opening three minutes of the third quarter and eventually ran their lead up to 74-53 with only six minutes remaining in she game.But the Bulldogs, led by substitutes such as Barry Barnhill, who scored five, and Ricky Crouch with 11, began to cut into that 21 - point Morehead margin. Meanwhile Ferrum’s center Jerry Venable grabbed the first half scoring honors with 15 points.With 14:02 left in the second half Ferrum had jumped to a 31 point advantage before coach Jim Hartbarger put in his substitutes. Ferrum slowly increased the lead the rest of the way behind the 100 percent accurate shooting of Dave Flanigan which gathered nine points in the last ten minutes.Tech came out with a man-to-man and Ferrum broke the defense apart. Ferrum used a man-to-man throughout the game.Mike Schanne had 13 points for Ferrum and no one else had double figures for the Panthers. High scorer for Tech was Manuel with 11.Ferrum shot 42 percent for the game while Tech shot 33 percent. Led by Venable and Richard Neal, Ferrum grabbed 52 rebounds to VPI’s 14.
