Fourth Quarter Sinks ConsolBY MIKE BRUTON Eagle Sports WriterCOLLEGE STATION - The AM Consolidated Tigers stayed in the game with class B kingpin Richards for three quarters, but was overwhelmed by a fourth-quarter surge, as they were beaten, 60-50, Friday night in Tiger gym.Richards came into the game with a sparkling 29-2 ledger, but the Tigers fought the Panthers tooth and claw until .Merion Dean, the Richards big man, got loose early in the final period. Consol was outrebounded terribly by the Panthers in the first half, but inspired play had the Tigers out front, 22-20, at the half.The game was almost void of physical contact, as only five fouls were calk'd in the first half, 11 in the whole contest. Consol made the best of the six free throws they had in the game, as it cashed in on all of them. The difference in the game was definitely field goal shooting and rebounding, and the taller Panthers made it count in those categories, especially in the first half.RICHARDS. WENT to the boards in the opening period of score eight of their 12 points in that quarter on offensive rebounds. Consol coach Jim Foreman later got his troops together to take measures to shut off the Panthers' offensive board play.Foreman instructed postmen Philip Steen and Scott Shafer to block out underneath to prevent Dean and his cohorts from getting easy buckets. The move was somewhat successful, apparently, as the Panthers found themselves working a bit harder for their shots late in the second quarter and throughout the third.Ibe game was airtight in thefirst three quarters, as the score was knotted 10 times over that span, with the biggest lead being four points. The Panthers led the Tigers, 6-2, in the opening quarter, and later built up another four-point margin early in the second period, when the score read, 18-14.THE PANTHERS scored 17 points to the Tigers' 13 in the third stanza, to hold a 37-35 lead going into the dosing period. Then the roof fell in on Consol. After Panther,guard Clifford Kroll canned a freethrow at 7:57 in the fourth quarter, Dean scored threeconsecutive baskets to spark a scoring spree that resulted in a 49-35 advantage for Richards.The 14-point edge was the biggest scoring gap in the contest, and the game dock read 4:21 at this point.While the Panthers had begun to look like the team that many forecasted to win the class B basketball title. Consol was suffering a disastrous cold streak. The Tigers had gone almost four and a half minutes without producing a singleI *point.BUT THE Tigers wouldn't quit. Two baskets by Steen, and a field goal along with a three-point play by Bob Randall, cut the Panther lead to seven, with the scoreboard reading, 51-44, with 2:40 left in the game. The crowd, composed of fans from both factions, came to life, and for a moment a Consol comeback looked like a strong possibility.But the Panthers prevailed. In the last several games, the Tigers have played well fundamentally, and have had as much hustle as any coach could ask for. But in the fourth quarter, the Tigers have not been able to score the easy bucket. They seemed to be jinxed, the ball just wouldn’t fall in the hoop for them early in the fourth quarter.THE TIGERS had three players in double figures, as Steen led the scoring with 12 points, followed by Shafer and Pat Cartwright with 10 counters each. The Panthers were led by the big man Dean, who chalked up 19 points, with Kroll and Barn Carruthers contributing 15 and 10 tallies respectively.The loss dropped Consol’s record to 9-12, while the Panthers, who were ranked No. 3 in the state at the start of this season, improved their slate to 30-2.The Consol Junior Varsity demolished the Richards JV, 68-19, to serve as the silver lining in the dark cloud for the Tigers.
