OPEN SUED FRIDAYKennedy’s Inexperienced Outfit Faces Alumni; Must Step If Team Maintains Coaldig- ] ger Basketball Tradition ;;Gary, Jan. 2—The first of a 21; Kama schedule for tha Gary Coal-diggers will be played at 8 o'clock f Friday night when the alumni will be met on the floor of the local colored school. Following thl* game the Coal digger* will play the cream of j tha basketball crop of the Southern Waet Virginia section. The schedule also calls for a trip to Lynch, Ky.About twenty boys are battling for positions lt;*n the Gary club, with all positions thrown wide open through graduation and migration. Only one letterman is available for th* team, that one being John Iaw*on, who seems to be a safe bet for one of the positions. Other* who are making a merry fight for regular berths are J/oo Kroll. Dan Bpielman. Willie Zalesky, Joe ludnosky and Billy Hanks at forward; Alex Kavoch at center, with Kroll also working in that position, Zack Kush, John Switch, and Pete Kush at guards; Kroll tba only senior in the above list, is out for the first time, but is showing up well and will see plenty of action Kovach, young brother of George, former Gary star, shows signs of developnlg into a real center. He Is only a sophomore as are Zalesky. itadnosky, Hank* Switch and I'ete Kush.Vw and GreeaTba 1935 Coaldigger* will be a new, grocu team, and are going to have a lot to learn. And if they live up to the record* set by the teams which have carried the Gary colors In the three years of Hopper Kennedy’s coaching at the local school they will have to atep.During the past three seasons, Gary has won 44 game* and lost ten during the regular season play, has won the McDowell championship all three years; the Southern Conference championship the past two years, and won the regional tourney at Bluefleld in 1933. losing in the semi-finalx at Ruckhannon in the state tournament.These young Coaldigger* also ars faced with keeping intact the record of no defeats at home. All games lost by Kennedy team* have been on foreign courts, and three of them were at Princeton, the only team having an edge on Gary In tatnew played l»etween the two schoola.The Alumni team will be favored to win Friday night, with such former star* as Kearns, Switch.
