GARDEN VALLEY — The Golden Sierra High boysbasketball team returned to action Monthly night following a week of inactivity. Golden Sierra played hard but could not find the basket after their layoff and fell to a strong Argonaut Mustang team, 53-30.Argonaut took a 13-point lead at halftime and never looked back in the second half as the pressure defense ofthe Mustangs’ shut down the Grizzly offense, holdingGolden Sierra 'below 10 points in Ml four quarters of the game.Golden Sierra trailed 42-22 entering the final period.Grizzly Phil Seabury scored with a layup and Jason Potter marked the scoreboard with a post move and ensuing free throw as he was fouled. Bryan Scfaeneman’s basket cut the Mustang lead to 15 points, but Golden Sierra would get no closer the remainder of the contest. Argonaut followed the Grizzly run with a pair of field goals and three free throws pushing the advantage back to 22 points.“1 have a good blend of young kids and experienced players. We are extremely quick and our kids play hard,” Argonaut Coach Minnie Cranford commented about his team’s 10-1 start. ‘‘We play pressure defense and we try to break your offensive stride so you. can never get into the flow of the game.”The Mustangs’ pressure defense put the vice on the Golden Sierra offense. The Grizzlies shot only 30 percent from the floor and hit only l-of-10 3-point efforts. Argonaut also came up with 15 steals.Three Argonaut players scored in double figures on the evening. Matt Maleske scored a game-high 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Pete Goscou added 12 points and four steals. Postman Keith Ryan chipped in with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.For Golden Sierra, Seabury led his squad with 11 points and three steals. Scheneman was held in check with five points but grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Kevin Joseph chipped in with six points and six rebounds.Golden Sierra did play well on the defensive end through most of the contest. Despite only scoring six points in the first period, the Grizzlies held the Mustangs at bay for much of the quarter. A 7-0 tun by Argonaut allowed them to take a lead, still the Grizzlies trailed by only five at the end of the first period.Argonaut expanded their lead during the second frame as they outscored the Grizzlies 17-9. Seabury scored six points during the period to keep the Golden Sierra comeback hopes alive for the second half.
