Stopping at Epping, a dip pute arofe between this fellow and a poor fmith of the neighbourhood, and between whom blows commenced,which terminated of courfe in favour of Ward, who h^d the neceftary advantage of fcience on his fide. By the provocations of Ward, however, the flame of diP cord broke out once more, and he ftruck his competitor fo violently as to beat, in the lower ribs, which injured the kidnies, and occafioned inftant death. The public refentment was very great* and equally juft, on the occafion: this cruel diftributor of death being apprehended, the jury were divided in their opinions, feven being for declaring it wilful murder, and nine manflaughter. Of courfe he was convicted of the latter, and committed to take his trial at the Old Bailey accordingly.This is the fecond death at leaft which has occurred in confequence of this difreputable practice, when it it confidered in the light of gaming andamufement•
