CHRONICLE. [199the fcene of adion in OdiHam.-— Several hundreds of people paid half a. guinea a-picce to gain ad-miflion within the paddock, where the ftage was raifed. The paddock was well- defended againft the multitude by Tring, Ryan, Dunn, and a number of other of the ftrongeft-men in England, who with clubs looked like fo many giants; but what can relift the Ihock of an Eng-li(h mob r.Thc-paddock was broken down, and the torrent, rulhed in.' -The combatants mounted the ftage exaly at one o’clock, and, after the ufual falutation, Mendoza inftantly began the onfet with all the heat and impetuolity of a man determined on viory. lie threw himfdf in with much aivity, and difplayed much (hewy enterprife, while Humphreys retreated and avoided the blows. The latter bore himfelf with great referve, and the Jew was accordingly the aflailant . in the firft fix or fevcn rounds. In thefe, Mendoza being more hazardous and more fuccefsful than Humphreys, the bets, which were two to one in favour of the latter before the battle, changed to fix to four, feven . to four, and at laft two to one againft' him. Several blows of Mendoza had their effect. He cut Humphreys-under the Jefc eye, and of courfc endeavoured to follow up the wound, but in this he was dilappointed by the fuperior addrefs of his opponent. ,The ftage, from' the wetnefs of the day, was extremely flippery, and for fome time neither of them could keep their feet fo as to give lirmnefs to their aflion. To remedy this; Humphreys threw off his fhoes, and got a pair of worfted •{lockings, in which* without fnocs,he continued the battle with im-proved footing.After they had fought 18 or 19 minutes, Humphreys began to ma-nifefthis fuperior Ikill, and the bets again changed in bis favour. He planted a dreadful blow on the neck, or1 near the jaw of the Jew, wiich lickened, and almoll difabled him. He continued the battle, however, with much determination of fpirit, until extravafated blood and exhaufted breath, made him fo helplefs, that he lay on the • ftage unable to rife, and yielded the conteft.The battle lafted 29 minutes.Humphreys was feconded by Johnfon, and Mendoza by Jacobs.In confcquence of the above battle, it is faid that upwards of .20,0001. fterling of bets will be transferred from the Jews to the Chriftians—rather to the Gentiles.This day, at a half-yearly ^ court of the proprietors of the y bank ftock, the governor acquainted the proprietors, that as this was the time when the dividends are ufu-ally declared, it was the unanimous opinion of the direors, that the next half-yearly dividend, ending the 25th inftant, ftiould be three pounds ten {hillings, which makes, the increafe of the dividend of that ftock at the rate of oneper cunt.Urns rick, Feb. 25. ‘On the 20 th inftant, John Downs,, efquire, in-fpeflor of excile, accompanied by fome other civil officers, and a detachment of the 27th regiment, with two field-pieces, proceeded to attack the caille of Ognolly, in which has been carried on for fome years an immenfe diftillery in open defiance of the laws ; but on the tirft appearance of ihe military force, the caftle furrendered without, the [ArJ 4 ‘ • . * Raft
