Beavers and Bobcats to battle in1,000CLUBDAVE BAUMANBy BILL DAVIDSON Sun Sports EditorTwo teams came to plav for half a game each . . . and another two teams came to play . . . period. In other words, there were a few scares, but no upsets in the opening round of the Brandon University Invitational Basketball Tournament Friday evening at the university gym.In the opening game of the four - team, two - day affair. Brandon University Bobcats held off an early charge by the Brandon Gunners to dispose of their senior league coun-ter parts. 77-52.Immediately following that assignment, the class of the annual tourney. Minot State F r o s h Beavers. likewise relegated the University of Saskatchewan (Regina campus) Cougars to the consolation final.Beavers, as defending cham pions.' waltzed to a convincing 83-65 victory against their Western Intercollegiate Athlete Association opponents.I n tonight's concluding chapter, the Gunners and Cougars will meet in the consolation at 7 p.m.. while the Beavers and Bobcats clash at 9 for all the marbles. Before we get any further, there was an error, or rather an omission in Friday s edition of The Sun. Dave Bauman, the starry sophomore Bobcat, is gunning for 1.000 points. After last night's 20-point performance. he is within 14 of that plateau. However, four-year veteran guard Mel Harvey, thanks to a 10-point output, is a mere nine away from that magic number. Becuase of graduation, tonight's contest will be his last.Getting back to the Bobeat-Gunner game, the seniors slaved within four points of the university squad until moments before the end of the opening half. A late spurge by the Bobcats gave them a 30-22 halftime lead, and under coach Gary Howard they never looked back.Besides Bauman and Harvey, rookies Frank Lindal and Jack Mitchell collected 13 and 12points respectively. For I he Gunners, it was the brother-in-law duo of TerryLittle and Lefty Hendrickson. Little, one of the best players in the tourney, hooped 20 points, while Hendrickson was closebehind with 17. No less than 11 of Hendrickson’s points came via the line. In his first 10 attempts. he was letter perfect . . he missed his 11th and swished the 12th.It was lack of conditioning, and hesitation in the late stages that cost us the game.” explained Gunner coach Don Gardner We (Bobcats) played terrible in the opening half. countered Howard, but our defence was terrific for the final 20 minutes.”Turning to the Beaver-Cougar contests, the Americans used a variety of defences, coupled with exceptional shooting from all over the floor, to keep the WC1AA club off balance. Number one of their defences was a full-court. man-to-man pressure, and doesn't that sound familiar. Beavers work out of a 1-4 offence, and that too sounds familiar. In any event, the eventual winners took a 37-31 lead into the dressing room at the half, upped it to 10 early in thesecond half, then held on until exploding late in the game for the win.Frank Bruels 'and Tom Heckaman led the Reavers with 19 points apiece, followed closely by Kurt Carlson with 18. Although he only hit for five points, guard Bill Jackson was one of the best, if not the best, players dressed.A freshman. Jackson has played with the senior Beavers, and. according to student coach Duane Schwab, is an all-around athlete. In fact. Oakland is supposedly hot on his tail for his prowess on the pitching mound.Although his ability as a baseball player is unknown to Brandon fans, he can play basketball. Jackson was the driving force last night, especially when the Cougars made an unsuccessful attempthoopto force the Beavers into turn overs. This is not to say that the Cougars are inept They provided the local patrons with plenty to cheer about, but just couldn't handle the well-oiled machine from south of the border.Merv Prier paced the Regina team with 16 points, while guard John Schepers. who was a match for Jackson, chipped in with 13.Tonight's semi-final should be the closest of the evening as the Gunners and Cougars seem to be fairly evenly matched. The championship, however, shouldn’t be that close. It will be close if the Bobcats do everything right.Game times, once again, are 7 o'clock for the consolation, and 9 o'clock for the championship.final1,000CLUBMEL HARVEY
