Scare Crow49er11th Pro PactSAN FRANCISCO (UPI) Veteran running back John David Crow, who recently returned from Southeast Asia where he was pinned down byViet Cong fire, signed a one-year contract Monday with the San Francisco 49ers.Amount of the contract was not revealed but general manager Lou Spadia said the formerTexas AM star received a raise for his 11th pro footballseason.Spadia called a news conference to announce the signing because Crow is only one of five running backs in the National Football League who haveplayed at least 10 years. Othersare Jim Taylor, Lenny Moore, Nick Pietrosante and Tim Brown.“Not too many reach that pinnacle,” said Spadia. “This is an extraordinary gentleman and a great man both on and off thefootball field.”Crow, 31, of Pine Bluff, Ark., said the day after he and five other pro football players arrived in Saigon, they all were pinned down by a Viet Cong terrorist attack while inside the Miracourt Hotel.“An American officer with a .45 in his hand rushed into our room at 3 o’clock in the morning and yelled, ‘Hit thefloor.’ We grabbed our mattresses, laid on the floor and putthe mattresses over us,” said Crow.“We stayed that way from Wednesday morning to Saturday noon. It was pretty hairy. Several rounds hit inside a room of the hotel and a sniper flipped a hand grenade into the hotel from an alley.iCrow said none of the players was injured in the attack and no Viet Cong terrorist enteredthe hotel.Bill Brown of the Minnesota Vikings roomed with Crow at the time.
