This final act climaxed a torrid basketball contest between Catholic High and the Graettinger Pirates. The Irish squeaked by 60-55. The vict o r y sends the Irish into District Tournament play this week at Algona. They will meet Armstrong Wednesday night at 7:30 in the GarriganGym,Pirates FavoritesThese two teams had been expected to meet for the championship with the Pirates in the favorite’s role. They had lost only ( one game during the year and had looked very Impressive in beating .the Emmetsburg E'Hawks 73 38 Wednesday night. They had a 52* 49 lead with 3 minutes to play before the Irish blew them out of contention with a furious barrage. As it turned out this was only the second occasion the Pirates had managed a 3-point lead, as ECU had the upper hand most of theway. Graettinger came back from an 80 deficit early in the first quarter to*go ahead 12-9 but wason the short end most of the time until that final lead.Coach John Harrington’s decision to start his fear big players along with Larry Hand was pro* bably die deciding factor, as the Irish controled the boards and the tempo of the game. The Pirates were able to score only twice on the fast break. .Another major factor in the win was the outstanding defensive play of Denny Geh-ling. Gehling had the task most ol the game of guarding Graet* ting or's ace Chuck Moran, who is a great all around man. Moran got only one field goal and threefree throws. He just could not get shocking room often eooui and this hurt Graektinger’s cause more than- anythin* else. GehUng also chipped in with 8 points.BCH L*Mt Three ton* set shots by Larry Hand and free throws by Gehling and Jim Rise mu s sent the Irish out In front 8-0 after 3:58 had been played. Then Ron Moran and Dean Peterson took over for the Pirates and with one minute to go in the quarter it was 12-9 for Graettinger. Gehling .and Bill Sebem hit for the Irish and Peterson scored from the charity Vine to make it13-13 at the end of the quarter. Then Emmetsburg held the lead most of the second period which ended 26-22 in their favor.Ron Moran’s two long heaves pulled Graettinger even again and it was even stoven the rest ox the quarter which saw the Irish leading 41-40 at the end.It was Bisenius, who had been held to 8 points so far, that carried the Irish in the final period. He poured in 12 points, six in the last two minutes. Ron Moran’s sensational long range shooting and goals by Dean Peterson kept the Pirates in contention. The Irishmanaged a 49-44 lead with 4 minutes to play but this did not last very long. Graettinger scored 3 points in the next 2 minutes and the packed house was in an uproar.Bisenius hit from close in and Hand stole the ball and fed big Jim for another one and it was 53-52. There were just those 14 seconds left when Hand stepped to the free throw line with his team leading 7-55. Hand’s shot skipped off the front of the rim and the Pirates came down with the rebound. They broke quickly up the floor but Gary Weir, whoith Graettingeihad just come from the bench, stole a pass and. fired a strike to Hand going the other way. Hand hit the layup and was fouled. He made the free throw and the Irish were home. Graettinger had to shoot from the outside most of the time and had it not been for the long heaves of Ron Moran it would not have been close.The two teams reached the finals with lopsided victories in the semifinals. Graettinger raced past the cold shooting Public High E’Hawks 73-38, while the Irish romped past Ayrshire 88-49. Graettinger had four players in double scoring figures against the Hawks. Chuck Moran led with 17 points and Peterson had 16. Ted Ellis had 10 for the Hawks and Butch Brown S points.Bisenius scored 28 points and Hand 21 for the ECH against Ayrshire. Darr had 11 for Ayrshire. Coach Harrington substituted freely in the victory with the entire squad seeing a lot of action,Bisenius had 20 points in the big win over Graettinger and Lar ry Hand added 15. The rest of the’scoring was balanced. Ron Moran’s 20 points ied the Pirates.Wednesday night when the IrUh face Armstrong they will face Armstrong’s 6-9 pivot man in a district tournament game at Al-gona.
