★ ★ ★★ ★ ★Tough Guards Made SH Girls Top TeamSpring Hope High School's girls wont it understood, by gosh, that they've got the best femme basketball team in Nash County. They proved it in a big way last night with their third win of the season over Middlesex High, sweeping the 1957 Nash County Tournament championship.Three times before the two teams had met this season, Middlesex winning once ond Spring Hope twice, both SH victories by shaky one-point margins. But last night there was none of this one-point business; This fime Spring Hope did it up right with a big 62-49 spread.Through the season many fansnight on outside shooting, and Ella Green, who added 10.Little Marie Lewis had her third straight good tournament game forMiddlesex and poured in 27 points,, • i i ..I „ „ . her best effort ever against Springalways looked better than Spring! tTnr.rt n.lf . They’ve got ually in the high double figuresand coaches pointed to Middlesex as the pride of the league, basing that opinion primarily on hot forward play. So after the firing was over last night M-Sex coach Knid Drake was asked why his girlstremendous guard play, the best in the county. And tiiat’o what beat us tonight.”And Drake was right. The Spring Hope guard trio of tall Patsy Bunn, little Keba Hathaway and swift Peggy Hinton put a big crimp in the usual torrid scoring of the Middlesex forwards. The three moved swiftly and deftly to keep pace with Middlesex’ feared weaving offense, switching effectively on the picks, forcing hurried shots.It was beautiful defensive basketball, and it paved the way for a big championship victory, adding the tourney crown to Spring Hope’s regular-season title.There had to be some scoring help, however, and this time it was Spring Hope, instead of Middlesex, which came up with the three way point punch.Dottie Murray, who probably played the finest game of her career, led the SH scoring. She hit on every shot in the book—sets, jumps, drives and hooks—to rack up 29 points, tops for the night. She was amply aided by Maxine Whitley, who had a hot 21-pointwere checked. Sondra Bunn got 14 but Connie Fulghum was held to eight.While the final spread was a bigone of 13 points, most of the game was far closer than that.With 3:30 to play Middlesex was very much in the ball game, trailing by only 49-44. But at 3:15 Whit-ley sank one of her beautiful long ones, and then Muray went on a one-gal scoring war against Middlesex. She unloaded six straight points, and with 2:10 left in tho game Spring Hope led by 12, 36-44. Murray ran it to 14 points, 60-46, with one minute to go and the championship battle was all sewed up in Spring Hope’s Gold and Black colors.Middlesex led only once, 1-0. After that Green hit a field goal, Murray got one, Green sank another and Whitley hit. After two minutes it was SH by 9-1. Spring Hope held a 19-12 lead after the first quarter, with 10 of the M-Sex points having been scored by Lewis.
