Shelby moves into2A sectional final vs.West Caldwell FridayTamlin BasonStar Sports WriterShelby scored just six points in the first quarter in Wednesday night’s 2A playoff game against North Henderson. The Golden Lions did not shoot a free throw until midway through the fourth quarter and just five Shelby players added to the total point total of 47.Still all that was good enough for a ticket to theKM ADVANCES, 2B?*next round of the playoffs thanks to a 47-42 win against the Knights.“Coach gave us a pep talk at halftime,” Marcus Perry said. When asked what coach Ken Napier said, Perry replied: “To put the ball in the basket.”Perry and Shawn Haynes did just that in the opening minutes of the third quarter.Haynes scored on the opening possession and Perry scored just seconds later and just like that a four-point halftime deficit was erased and the score was tied at 20.Haynes and North Henderson’s Daniel Smith then traded layups until Perry drove home a three pointer with 4:45 remaining in the quarter to give the Golden Lions a 25-24 advantage. They would never again trail.“We were kind of nervous and a little cold at first,” Perry said. That was apparent to any that saw that both teams mustered just six points in the opening period.“The funny thing about that is that we scouted them in their last game when they won 82-76,” Napier said. “They scouted us also and I think their strategy was to slow down the pace.”In the first half North Henderson managed to spread its offense around the top of the key and got plenty of open looks, however the Knights didn’t convert from outside and most of their points came on second and third chances. Meanwhile, Shelby was forcing its offense, pounding the ball inside and drawing plenty of contact.“I told the guys that the first thing we have to do is feel out the officials,” Napier said. “They seemed to be just letting them play and we were able to adjust to that.”Napier added that the officials were consistent throughout the game.Shelby (19-5) did not make a trip to the line until there was 4:15 left in the fourth quarter when Perry was fouled on a layup. Perry led all scores with 19, but more importantly, whenever Shelby needed a1 rebound or an assist Perry was there to pick up the slack.“You need players who can do stuff like that,” Napier said. Will Young and Van Eskridge scored eight apiece and Scooter Lawrence and Haynes each had six.Young and Perry protected the lead by going a combined 6-for-6 from the line downthe stretch. The Golden Lions will play at West Caldwell Friday night.
