Grimes brothers, Wilcox begin action at state wrestling meetiThe Bemidji Lumberjacksthree Region 8 wrestling champions will begin their quests of state titles today when action starts in the individual phase of the state meet at St. Paul.Nestle and Tom Grimes and Mark Wilcox will carry the Jacks hopes with Nestle Grimes given the best chance of going all the way. Grimes made the state last year, representing Blackduck, beating Dave Roberts of Staples but lost his next two starts, bowing to Gary Dalheimer of St. Michael-Albertville 7-6 and Mark Kozitza of Nicollet 5-4. Both of those wrestlers will be back though neither will be in Grimes weight class. Kozitza remains at 98 where he could meet Tom Grimes while Dalheimer is now at 112. Grimes draws Tony Klein of Roosevelt in the first round at 105 and would face the winner of a bout between Jeff Carlson of Worthington and Wade Voss of Granite Falls if he gets past his opener. There will be no wrestlebaeks this year with the semi-final losers battling for third place. (Irinies carries a perfect 28-0 record into the state with 20 falls.Tom Grimes, just an eighth grader, will meet Mike Streeter of Fergus Falls in his opener. Grimes defeated Streeter 12-2 at the Brainerd Invitational in their only meeting this year. The winner gets a tough assignment in the quarter-finals, facing the winner of the match between Kozitza and Karl Geninger of Grand Rapids. Grimes is 26-3 on the year with 17 falls.Wilcox faces Tom Albrecht of St. Paul Humboldt in his first round match with the winner meeting either Dan Danks of Blue Earth or Greg Ganyo of St. Louis Park, whose coach Jack Willhite, originated the sport at Bemidji in 1955. Wilcox is 23-2 on the season with 12 Also carrying the Region 8 banner are Leon Sulerud, Jeff Dale, Mark Langved and Kevin Lindberg of Fertile,Thompson of Waubun and Mike Hervey of Sacred Heart. Lindberg is defending state champ while Hervey is a state independent school champion.The 38th annual Minnesota State High School Wrestling Tournament will begin today and run through Saturday at the St. Paul Civic Center.For the first time ever the tournament will feature a dual meet team tournament along with the customary individual tournament where 192 boys compete for top honors in each of the 12 weight categories.The meet will begin at 1 p.m. today with the first round of the individual tourney. Action continues this evening with quarter-finals and semifinals of the individual event. Six mats will be used duringfirst day’s activity.Friday at 1 o’clock the team tournament will get underway with quarter-final matches. Friday evening the semifinals of the team event will be staged. Saturday morning consolation matches will be held with the finals in both the individual and team tournaments to be held Saturday afternoon. Individual championships will begin at 1 p m. with the dual meet title to be decided at 2:45.In the individual tournament three state champions from 1974 will be back to defend their crowns. Fridley senior Scott Dickenson, a 98-pound titlist a year ago will take a perfect 28-0 record into the 112 pound category this season; senior Kevin Lindberg of Fertile-Beltrami, wh(^ won top honors at 145 pounds last February will wrestle at 155 boasting a 27-0 record; and Cooper senior Jay Berthiaume will be back at 167. Like Dickenson and Lindberg, Berthiaume is undefeated lt;26-0).Pairings for the team tournament which begins Friday at 1 p.m. will pit Region Four champion Fridley (17-0) against Region Eight Champion Fertile-Beltrami (15-0), and Region Two champion St. James (9-4) against Region Six winner Moorhead (17-0) in upperbracket action.Lea (18-1-1) goes against Region Three tit list Canby (12-0) and Region Five champion St. Michael-Albertville (14-0) will oppose Region Seven winner Grand Rapids (12-2).Semi-finals are on tap Friday night beginning at 7 p.m.TOURNAMENT NOTES — Among the eight teams in the dual meet tournament, five own undefeated records. The eight have a combined won-lost mark of 114-7-1 ...
