Since basketball is the king ofnutter where voutopics no mailer wnere you go m Kokomo these days, hope you don’t mind if I concentrate on it this morn. First, may 1 throw some congrats to Les Ray and his Kats for a job well done and also to Dean Day and his finewteam, and to the Braves, our neighbors to the north. . . all three were good lull clubs.Saw Erwin Cox on TV Saturday afternoon, and as usual he held up the Cox name with a great performance for Drake against Cincy. He’s been a stalwart for his team for three years. Yep, that name Cox brings back more memories. Most of vcu remember Clyde 4 Harold who starred in the early fifties and led Kokomo to a number-one ranking in the fmal A.P. poll (Marion Crawley often said that it was the best high school team he had ever seen). . .Big Clyde ^at least we tliot he was big in those days) was the fastest center around. And we’ll all remember “little Harold a good six foot plus) playing with that protective splint on his wrist. And 1 see we liave some more Cox toys coming along --i.arry of Western (son of Grover). Now, of course, all ofthe Cox family is not basketball-minded. Floyd is an art teacher at Sycamore Jr. High and Mary (Beatty) is very active in the art association here (Mary has worked at Continental for quite some time). ... By the way, Harold is now at Portage (been there six wars). Understand he now has his Masters and may be interested in moving luck closer to home (Good let lor some school in our area, believe me!).There’s another member of the “Cox Clan” you may think I be forgotten. You can bet your bottom state championship 1 have not’ ... .And that's Dave! .And all of this leads iq to this story. When Dave was a junior (and didn’t weigh c\ei 12 pounds in a heavy shower) lie was working out one day with the B Team. I was sitting next to Russ Bratton and Joe Platt who were discussing his future. They were trying to make up their respective minds whether to cut him or not. They finally decided that he worked so hard and wanted it so badly that they would keep giving him a try. Well, folks, that TRY paid off. That slender young man teamed with another youngster by the name of Babe ‘Pryor to play the best “guard game” most people have ever seen. They were nearly perfect - passed well, forced Manual into numerous errors (especially m that last fateful minute and a half of the regular game). . . You know, when they showed the sound films of that game at the Sipe, 1 bought myself a large bag of popcorn and sat right on the very front row. Saw if three times, too. Y’ou see, it was so wonderful (after all those years)I was afraid someone was gonna’ change the ending’So Long ...P.S. -- Besides the suffering of those years was worthit just to hear INDIANAPOLIS’ OWN Tom’Carnegie sav -* U 11 ♦ c '
