Most OutstandingL[Veneri To HonorCountythleteAlbert Veneri, Sophia, hasiIannounced the proposal for awarding the Veneri Trophy to the “Most Outstanding Athlete” in Raleigh Comity at the 1966 sectional basketball tournament March 5th at the Raleigh County Armory.Veneri set up the award to honor the outstanding athlete in Raleigh County. Coaches, officials and sportswriters vote by ballots and the award is given to the athlete receiving the largest number of the votes.Meeting Slatedt2IFor Sportsmen;i*)iPlans to form a Raleigh County chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America have been announced by Keigh Taylor, president of the Wayne Countychapter.Taylor announced that a meeting would be held at the Raleigh County Courthouse, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and the public is invited.The league is dedicated to the restoration and wise use of America’s soil, wood lands, wildlife, and proper utilization of these resources.The organization has been instrumental in establishing stateVeneri began sponsoring the trophy several years ago and presented two trophies, one each to the most outstanding basketball and football player in the county.It was then brought into light that wrestlers and track athletes were forgotten and since only one award has been presented.This will be the ninth annual awarding of the “Most Outstanding Athlete” trophy by Veneri with several county athletes in contention for the coveted award.Those in the running this year include: Mason Epperly, (seeking his third consecutive statewrestling crown for Shady) Roger Landy, (star end at Marsh Fork), Harry Mayo, (basketball standout at Stratton), Dave Meadows, (quarterback at Marsh Fork) Jim Stone, (hoop stalwart at Sophia) Danny Knight (basketball “spark at Trap Hill) and Jack Richmond (quarterback at Shady).Previous winners of the trophy include: Bernard Blackburn (Sophia), Donald Ray Basham (Sophia), Isaiah Bailey (Stratton), Elmer Goins (Mark Twain), Jimmy Jo Woody (Sophia), Larry Bowman (Sophia), Winston Holbrook (Marsh Fork), Charles Covey (Trap Hill), Charles Clark (Stoco) and Doug Basham (SoDhia).sirt'tc3IJ1(i)]r■*j]
