Just a matter of borrowing the right shotBy CHUCK HAHN Minisink Valley High’s four points were enough Friday night to give the Warriors a three-way tie with Red Hook and Middletown for 11th place in the 21-team field in the 4th Annual Section 9 Indoor Track and Field Championships. Those four points were also enough to bring an ear-to-ear grin on the face of Don Perry, assistant to Minisink track coach George Fisher.Perry, who had his wife Sue and daughter Kelly along with him, found it hard to contain his joy when Minisink’s John Antoni heaved the shot 46 feet, 7 inches to take second place.“That’s really something,” he yelled. “John and Joe (Pierce) deserve a lot of credit. This is the first meet this year for them, and they’ve really worked hard to get here.”The coach went on to tell how the two. shot putters worked out on their own when ever and whereever they could find a place that was unoccupied. According to Perry, who works with the field eventers on the Minisink indoor team, Antoni, a senior, and Pierce a junior, have spent a lot of nights lifting weights in a cold garage to build their bodies. “And,During first-place tussle between Valley Central and Nanuet last friday, Kelly Perry decided the activity needed a closer look. Kelly, who is 2 years old, is the daughter of Don Perry, assistant track coach at Minisink Valley.—TH-Kecord photos by Chuck Hahnwhen it comes to throwing the shot around they’re almost fanatics,” Perry said.“In fact,” he added, “I remember one night recently, when we ended up on a secondary road near the Johnson Golf Club and had a fine practice session until one heaved the metal shot right in the middle of a hard, macadam road, and the shot split right in half.”Perry looked around sheepishly and then whispered, “Heck! John won that runner-up spot tonight using a borrowed shot. He got it from the Washingtonville High boys.”Pierce didn’t place in the top five Friday, but that didn’t worry Perry too much. The coach said, “We don’t have a circle for practice, so Joe isn’t used to one. He threw over 40 feet, but kept tripping over the toe-board and fouled out.“Joe is amazing, though,” Perry added. “Last year he bench pressed only 120 pounds, but this year he is up 70 pounds already. He has nice form and could do well when he puts it all together.”Perry then said the two Minisink shot putters labored in the shadow of Antoni’s brother Bob — a 48-footer—last year, but are expected to come into their own during the coming outdoor track season.“Antoni has already thrown 47 feet in practice,” Perry explained. “I expect him to hit 50 feet before the year is over.” Perry then said Antoni, who is small for a shot putter at 5-feet-9,165 pounds, Should do better outdoors because his small hands will get a better feel of the metal shot used there. “And, of course, Pierce has an extra year to do the same,” Perry added.With his second-pace finish Friday, Antoni will be heaving the shot again Wednesday night in the state qualifying ipeet at West Point, and he could have a tough time finishing in the top three Wednesday if North Rockland's Jim Massaro and Nanuet’s Dave Mellion have a good night.
