His mother is the former Amy Kalmar, and an uncle, Lou Kalmar, played one of the guard positions on the memorable Mountaineer basketball team that won the 1942 National Invitation Tournament The Kalmars grew up on Miller Hill, near Pursglove.An aunt. Mrs Ann Gerosky. still lives here, and the Gluchoskis have been visiting her regularly since Adam was born in Woodbridge.“They come to see us every year, she said, “and Adam returned about three weeks ago to goover the campus.The bo\ got scholarship offers from other schools. He had an appointment to \rm. and bidsfrom Penn State. South Carolina, Notre Dame. New Mexico, etc. Family influences helped him make his decision.We all wanted to see him come to West Virginia, where he'd be near the family. He had starred at University High, but mostly as a rebounder and defensive player. He stood only 6 feet, not too small to play around the high school bankboards JO years ago. and yyas strong and smart. His handicap yyas the lack of good shooting ability, even tor that era before everybody started throyying the ball one-handed at the basket.Lou played some as a freshman at WVU and managed to earn a letter his sophomore year as a reserve Rut the next season he gave up basketballHe started to playing less, and after a few gamesquit the team He decided to concentrate on hisengineering studies% ftHe might not have rejoined the Mountaineers forthe 1942 season, had more candidates been available Center star Rudy Baric, a campus buddy, prevailed on him to return That gave the squad only eight players, until a member of the football team came out to make the total nine. Those were the davs before WVU granted basketball scholarships, and some of the other volunteer candidates did notreturn for one reason or another.Lou took over a starting job from the beginning to help make the Mountaineers a championship club. He still lacked the good shooting touch, but he became a sure passer in the team’s ball-controloffense. He also backed up Baric in rebounds, playedhis usual tough defensive game.He continues to do well in business. He now holds a vice president's job with Continental Can. with headquarters in Savannah. Ga. As you can see, he's come a long way from the Miller Hill mine camp
