And Lyndon Still Has Pomona's NumberCH Stuns Top-Seeded ‘CatsBy JAY BEMISAn upset and a rivalry treated fans at Central Heights* arena Friday night* as the home-eourt Vikings knocked off top-seeded Burlington, 76-66, and Lyndon edged rival Pomona, 51-49, in regional 2-A basketball competition. The wins assure both Central Heights and Lyndon of sub-state tournament appearances. Those two teams will clash in final-round action tonight to determine each one's site and opponent in sub-state play.Although Burlington’s Doug Danner stole the show in the first half of play, it was CH’s Leroy Krat2berg who clearly was the favorite for any most-valuable-player award that might be given for Friday night’s action.Danner sizzled in the early going, hitting eight consecutive shots from the field in the first half, seven of those in the first quarter alone. But while DannerMore Regional Photos On Rifle •eventually sat pretty at intermission with 18 tallies, Kratzberg himself had 14 points at the half and added 13 more in the second to finish the night with 27.Meanwhile, only 6 points awaited Danner in the last half of play after Heights realized he was the man to defend.Burlington, a winner of 17 of its first 18 games this season, was sitting pretty as a team at halftime, leading the Vikings by a count of 44-34. But CH’s shooting was sweet in the second half when compared to the Wildcats, whose first-half success suddenly turned sour. After first-half shooting of 54 percent, the Wildcats could only hit eight of 36 shots in the second half for a mere 22 percent. In contrast, CH hit 44 percent of its shots in the first half and 56 percent in the second, along with 14 of 20 clutch-free-throw shooting.CH trimmed Burlington’s 10-point intermission advantage to only 3, 54-51, after three stanzas. Then, with 7:10 remaining in the last quarter, CH’s George Downs, a 6-2 senior who put in a strong performance coming off the bench, hit a 20-foot shot that put the Vikings ahead for good, 55-54.Following Kratzberg In CH’s scoring column was Steve Bones with 17 tallies, Downs with 15, and Chuck Wilson with 12. Dale Decker finished the night with 16 points for the Wildcats, second to Danner's 24.After a 10-all tie after first-quarter action, Nick Dawson’s Lyndon Tigers held a slight advantage through most of the rest of the way in Friday’s first game. With 29 seconds remaining to play, Pomona capped another rally and again knotted the score at 49-all with a free throw from senior Dave Miller. But at the other end of the court, Tiger Ron Neilson swished a 15-footer with only 11 seconds left to put Lyndon on top, 51-49.A good argument in Pomona coach Bob Taul’s favor would be the fact that he lost senior guard Jim Thornbrugh early in the first quarter. Thornbrugh badly sprained his ankle and was taken to Ottawa’s Ransom Memorial Hospital for minor treatment. PHS already had one regular, Keith Love, on the bench with a broken leg suffered in practice Wednesday. But setting that aside, the final statistics for the two squads were about as evenly matched as possible when two rivals meet. Both the Tigers and the Indians hit 21 field goals, Lyndon hitting 40 percent of its shots and the Indians 42 percent. Pomona hit seven of 16 free throws, while Lyndon hit two more, nine of 17. It could be safe to say that free throws were a deciding factor In the ball game.Pomona had more rebounds than thePhetes By Mika OirtlrLyndon’s Mark Feltner (right) Confronted Pomona’s High-Scoring Dave MillerTigers, 31-26, but the Indians also had one more turnover than did Lyndon, 13-12.Larry Wigger was tops in Tiger scoring with 18 points, followed by Mack Beatty, who had 12.Pomona’s Dave Miller was the game’s leading scorer with 21 tallies, while teammate Tom Brown added 12. The Indians closed out the season at 13-3.Including the Friday night wins, Central Heights now stands at 15-4 for the season, while Lyndon’s mark is 16-5,Tonight's action between Lyndon and Central Heights begins with an 8 o’clock tipoff. The first-place winner will play the second-place winner of another regional tourney, while the second-place winner of tonight’s Heights’ action plays the first-place winner of another regional.Sites for the sub-state action will be cither Lyndon or Chanute for each team, depending on a decision by the state’s high school activities association. Those who attend tonight’s contest might consider going early if tonight’s crowd is a repeat of Friday’s. About 70 persons had to be seated in metal chairs Friday night because of the large crowd. Those 70 persons didn’t seem to mind, however, because the metal chairs they sat in gave them a courtside view of two exciting matches.Danner, 11-2-2; Mills, 2-0-1; Decker, 7-2-5; Douglass, 3-1-51 Kiefer, 3-3-3; Haight, 3-0-1.
