Dick Stuart Bemoans Reputation; Pleased with Move from Phils to NYBy Mil.TON RIC'HMANI P! Sports WriterFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (UPI) —Dick Stuart, seldom known to be In the right place at the right time, looked as If he was In the wrong place again. He looked a little lost, which he was, as a matter of fact. Here was the newest memberColby and gave three more to a Boston State squad that climbed from fifth to fourth place In the latest ratings. The American International Aces also advanced In the latest weekly round, polling points to trail surging Boston State by three. It was no contest beyond the big five as Williams, a leader three weeks ago, slipped to sixth place with only four points while Merrimack recorded a pair and Mlddlebury rounded off the list with one.In the major ranks, Cornell continued to rank a solid thirdplace with 34 points, 17 off Boston University's second placerace but nine ahead of fourthof the Mets walking unannounced Into the Yankees’camp In search of an old Pirate budy.“Anyone around here see Bob Friend?” Inquired Stuart.“Yeah, he’s outside doing some running In the outfield,” advised Pete Sheehy, the Yankees’ clubhouse man.“We’re supposed to play some golf together,” said Stuart.Sheehy shrugged and went about his work.Stuart had never been In the Yankees’ quarters before. He looked around like any wide-eye kid who was making his first visit.“This Is Mantle’s locker, Isn’t It?** said tiie big first baseman, moving closer for a better look. “I’d like to see those bandages he always wraps around his legs. Are they In Ms locker?”Someone told Stuart they weren’t there yet.Undecided whether or not to wait for Friend to finish, Stuart sat down In front of Mantle’s locker for a few minutes and started talking about how the Phillies sent him to the Mets for three minor leaguers the other day.“I felt very good when I heard about It,” he said.“John Quinn called me upand said you’ve been traded to the Mets. I didn’t even ask him for who. I just said thank you. I liked Phllly and all my associations there. That goes for Gene Mauch, too.“But I didn't think much of Quinn saying he would have putme on the San Diego roster If he couldn't have traded me. I thought that was bush. I’m an established player. I get half the salary Mantle does.“I can’t blame the Phillies for letting me go,” Stuart went on. “They got a good ball player In BUI White. Admit my batting average was terrible last year. Only .235. HoAr about the 28 homers I hit, though? and my 95 RBIs?“There was only one firstbaseman In the NationalLeague who hit more home runs than me, McCovey. And only one first baseman with more RBI’s, Banks. Look it up If you don’t believe me.”Stuart explained he was especially happy to be traded to the Mets because he just purchased a new home InGreenwich, Conn., which Isn’ttoo far up the road from Shea Stadium.“If you think I was happy, you should’ve seen my wife'sreaction to the trade. When she heard about It, she gave me a big kiss on the cheek.“This home I bought is reaUy something. Cost me 5C grand. It’s the cheapest house In the neighborhood. You know how ritzy Greenwich is. They got one house In my neighborhood for $500,000 and a few others for $300,000.“I’m In a very exclusive area,” he said, working up a full head of enthusiasm. “You have to go through gates to get to my house. There’s a big cop at the gate and he stops you. He asks you whom do you want to visit. If you say Dick Stuart, he calls me on the phone and I tell him If It’s okay or not.” The 33-year-old slugger says he didn’t talk much last year In Philadelphia.“I like to do my talking with the bat,” he said. “Last year, though, it only talked Inspurts.”Stuart laughed at his ownjoke.“I’m not gonna talk much in New York,” he said. Then, as If realizing thefutility of It all, he said, “no matter what you do, though, once you get a reputation In this game It sticks with you.” He’s dead right on that score. Stuart has a reputation, all right. And because of it, they’ll never cast him in a silent picture or even consider him for the Gold Glove Award.
