Albert Lea 3rd at Regional3 Tigers Win Ways Into StateThe old adage: “It’s quality not quantity that counts,” might well apply to Albert Lea High School’s wrestling team. With less than the usual nine or 10 grapplers that have made the trip to the regional tournament for the last hurdle before the state tournament, Albert Lea’s six performers put out 100 per cent at Lake City Saturday.Albert Lea didn’t win the team title nor did it place second, but the six Tigers were good enough to draw high praise from Coach Paul Ehrhard.5 PlaceOf the six men that made the trip, five placed in the top four positions and two took championships. That team effort paced Albert Lea to a third-place finish with 44 points. Big Nine foe Northfield took the team championship with 51 points and Owatonna’s Indians nosed out the Tigers for second place with a total of 46.Although the finish was the lowest Coach Paul Ehrhard has experienced since coming to Albert Lea in 1958, he was highly pleased with the outcome.“We went up there and had five of our kids place,” Ehrhard said. *T consider that a tremendous team effort on the part of all our kids.”Neist ChampGary Neist nailed down the 95-pound crown by going through three matches to run his unbeaten string on the season to 20.Mike Callahan, although n o t seeded in the first or second spot, went through three matches in the 120-pound class to gain his second consecutive berth in the state tournament.Heavyweight Mike Roberts will also appear in the ‘ big show at Mankato State College next Friday and Saturday. He won two referee’s decisions and then lost a 2-1 verdict in the finals to finish in the runner-up spot.Although Ken Stauch, sophomore 112 pounder, placed third and Dave Posthumus, senior 175 pounder, placed fourth, neither will see action at the state tourney. The first two place winners in each weight class advance.Neil Skaar, junior 145 pounder, was the only Albert Lean that failed to place. He lost a 6-5 decision to Faribault’s Basil Bauer-fiend in the first round. Bauerfiend was knocked off in the second round, thus ending Skaar’s chance to participate in the wrestlebacks.Neist Pins Prestonite Neist pinned Preston’s Jon Arnold in 2:40 of his first-round match, decisioned Blooming Prairie’s Ken Esplan, 8-0, in the semifinals and beat Northfield’s Keith Dennison, 9-2, for the championship.Callahan pinned Ken Esplan of Blooming Prairie in the first round and then decisioned t h e No. 1 seeded man, George Ce-plecha, of Faribault, 5-2, in what Ehrhard termed “the most thrilling match of the day.”Callahan got the championship by beating the No. 2 seeded man, Don Mullenbach, of Stewartville, 5-0.Roberts got referee’s decisions over John Ingram of Waseca and Duane Bergdale of Ellendale as both of his first two matches went into overtime.Owatonna’s Dave Nelson beat him, 2-1, in the finals. Two things could have given Albert Lea second place. If Roberts had won, the Tigers would have climbed ahead of the Indians. The event that really upset the applecart was that favorite Chuck Field of Rochester lost the 145-pound championship to Owatonna’s Stan Schuster.Ellendale’s Elliott Johnson won the 154-pound title to become the only Raider to advance into the state tournament.Ellendale finished in seventh place with 25 points.REGION ONf PLACINGSState Tournament RepresentativesGARY NEIST 95-Pound ChampMIKE CALLAHAN 120-Pound ChampMIKE ROBERTS Heavyweight Runner-UpIn City Meet . . .Ravenhorst Leads Teams1. PAUL (AP)-St. Paul Johnson gave retiring Coach Rube Gustafson the perfect farewell gift Saturday night, his fourth Minnesota High School hockey championship.Gustafson’s Governors dethroned defending state c hampion International Falls 4-3 in a oneovertime thunderous finale in St. Paul Auditorium as 8,087 fans, most of them St. Paul backers, roared their approval.Gustafson, who steps down officially in June, is the only non-Northern M nnesota coach ever to win the high school title. His teams also accomplished the feat in 1947, 1953 and 1955.Those four Johnson crowns are the only ones won by Twin Cities area schools in the meet’s 19-year history.Winning GoalRob Shattuck fired home Johnson’s winning goal 4 minutes, 31 seconds into the overtime after taking a pass from Mike Crupi. The deciding tally came on an 18-foot shot that skipped past Falls goalie Larry Roche.Only minutes before, International’s great Jim Amidon had given the Broncos new hope whenV BELTS PULLEYSROLLIR CHAIN AND SPROCKKTSVary L«r«a StockMIDWAY mssrhe rammed in the goal that tied it 3-3 with only 42 seconds left in regulation time. Amidon had skated half the length of the ice to tally an unassisted goal on a 22-foot shot. The defeat halted a 54-game unbeaten string for the Falls, who had two ties during that span.Third place went to 1962 run-nerup Roseau, which defeated St. Paul Murray 4-1.
