Section 9 meetVC captures indoor trackWEST POINTValley Central High School’s track and field team captured the 4th Annual Section 9 Indoor Championships early Saturday morning at the West Point Field House.The Vikings finished with 38 points to nose out Nanuet, wanner of the first three meets, which finished with 34. Tappan Zee was third with 27% while Monroe-Woodbury and Suffern tied for fourth with 27 each.The Vikings locked up the victory with a third-place finish in the 880 relay-final event-while Nanuet finished fifth in the event. The four Viking runners were Frazier Scott. Ed Pimm. Dan Doulin and Jeff Weiner, who clocked 1:36 flat to winner North Rockland’s 1:35.5 Three-time defending champion Nanuet started making its move midway through After 10 events, the Golden Knights closed within 8 points (27-19) of the earlv pace-setter Valley Central.with Monroe-Woodbury running surprising second with 25 points.Tappan Zee was fourth with 18% and Suffern fifth with 16 in the 21-team field.Nanuet, however, was expected to rack up a good share of points in the relays, where it is usually strong.The Knights had 2 first places after 10 events, Mike Nowicki winning the 1,000-yard run and Don Berich the 60-yard high hurdles.Valley Central shot into a 6-point lead over M-W, 26-20, after 8 events, with each team having 2 first places.Valley Central’s Ed Pimm captured the pole vault with a leap of 13-6, a new state high for the indoor season. Pimm and teamamte Mike Meier, who finished third, shared the old high of 13 feet even,Mike Wright gave the Vikings their othrr first in thetitle600-yard run, beating out Pat Baldwin of Middletown in 1:13.6.The two victories for Monroe-Woodbury were Mike Rubin in the shot put and Jim Clark in the triple jump. Rubin got off a toss of 49-5% to beat Minisink Valley’s John Antoni, while Clark jumped 42-8% in the triple to beat teammate Walt Fiedler.Washingtonville’s Leon Royste* was also an early winner, taking the long jump with a 20-3 effort. VC sophomore Jeff Weiner finished second.As expected, Howie McNiff of Albertus-Magnus, one of the top scholastic 2-milers in the country, won his specialty in 9:36.8. Ralph O’Conor of VC finished second.Suffern *s John Jeffrey set a meet record in the high jump as he leaped 6-2% to outduel Royster.
