I'MV*Jiv*JCold Winter• \ Freeze EndsAt Manningcl.123'8614314318515711471MANNING — It’s been a long, cold winter for the Kuemper Knights.A break in the weather did occur in the Manning gym last night as the Red and Gold picked up that evasive second win of the season by a 52-43 count over the Bulldogs. The final score was almost identical to that of the previous Kuemper win over Manning. That score was 52-44.Coach Lou Galetich inserted sophomore Mike Heider in his starting lineup for the first time, and the slender redhead came through with 16 points.John Bock showed flashes of his old form as he led the evening scorer with 19 points plus turning in a top floor game as the Knights put the skids on a 12 game losing streak.The Bulldogs held the upper hand in the first part of the contest. Aside from a 2-1 Kuemper lead in the first minute of play, Manning was never behind at that stage. Four points by Bob Brus led theeven Red and White scoring in the first eight minutes as Manning opened up a 13-10 first quarter lead. Nightmare for Bulldogs The next two quarters were a nightmare for the Bulldogs. They managed a total of five points in each of the second and third cantos. The Knight press so har-rassed the Manning quintet in the third period that they did not score from the court. All five counters were from the charitystrip.The Knights wrestled the lead away in the early moments of the second period. The 14-10 lead of the Bulldogs melted as Kuemper racked up eight straight points to regain the lead. They never lost it. At half time the Knights had nudged in front 21-18.Three minutes after the second half opened the Chargers raced to a 30-18 lead. The last four points were scored by Bock in the space of seven seconds as he scordd on a : fast break and then tallied as heI| pirated a Bulldog pass. Dale John-| son came in with six points and I Kuemper was comfortably in the ! drivers seat, 40-23, at the three quarter mark.The final eight minutes was a ragged affair. Both teams used their reserves freely. The Bulldogs found the hoop for 20 points—half of them being charity tosses. Gene Wycoff’s desperation heave at the final horn cut the deficit to nine points.Ti^e Lancers led the rebounding chart 41-26 and sank 21 of 45 attempts while Manning dumped in 11 of 39.Tom Bromert led the Bulldogs with 11 points although plagued with foul trouble throughout most of the game. Four baskets by Brus 51 was good for eight.j Coach Dan Balk's sophs ended g; their season with a 57-40 victory 17 i over the Bulldog reserves in the !3 : corner.
