RETIREMENT of Lane Tech football coach GEORGE RINGfrom the active coaching ranks brings hack high school day memories to your columnist who was somewhat of a Tiger athlete back in the early ’30s when King was head mentor at Austin. During his tenure at Austin King didn’t come away with any Tiger titles but he always had scrappy elevens and developed some outstanding individual stars. One of the biggest rivalries of those days was the season’s opener against Oak Park. Wonder why this neighborhood natural couldn’t be revived? It really packed ’em in the aisles a couple of deeades ago.
