Feb. 24.—Robert Fitzsimmons arrived in Jersey City this noon l'rom the west. T-io was accompanied' by “Kid Egan and money he had picked up on his travels. Fitzsimmons was indignant lt;fver the way Jeffries had been treated. He said: “It's a shame the way that Jim Jeffries has been roasted. They have been telling stories about his being whipped by Munroe, about his drinking, smoking and playing around in all sorts of ways, but they are not true. They have been saying the same thing about me, fine things for my wife to read, but they are not true at all. Jeffries and I have been in training and hard at work.ever since we have been on the road. “I’m not saying anything about myself, but I’ve been fighting for some time, and this man Jeffries is the real thing. He is the champion of champions. Tie's got the punch, is clever and has the endurance and the strength. Tf you don’t think so, hit him and see whether you can hurt him or not. i’ve tried it a good many times.”Fitzsimmons smiled derisively when he was asked about Jeffries refusing to meet “Mexican Pete.” tlie Mexican champion.“Jeffries is right.” said Bob. “The so-called champion was no good.
