DeBerardinis ClicksMV Catholic Tops Serra by 54-52By FRED HEV1A Sophomore Patsy DeBerardinis powered a 25-foot jump shot into the nets with three seconds remainingin the game to give Mon Va fying 54-52 victory over McKeesport Bishop Serra Tuesday night in the 1965-66 home finale for MVC,DeBerardinis, whose 19-points moved him into eighth place in the all-time one - season individual scoring race, brought the 750 “Parents Night” fans to their feet and onto the floor in the wild - and * wooiy finish that seems to be a practice with Spartan teams this year.The crowd gave Coach Tom Kovach and his Spar tans long and loud ovation as they padded their league record to 5-7.With DeBerardinis, George Toohey (15) and junior Mike Angotti (12) leading the way, Mon Valley led 14-0 and 16-1 before Duane Dudik sunk the first field goal for Serra with one second remaining in the first period.The game, a defensive encounter, saw both clubs hit 39 per cent from the field but the Spartans made up the margin with its superior rebounding (32-25). But an attempt to get the ball down court by the Eagles was terminated by junior Mike Varosky who intercepted a pass and was fouled as time ran out. Varosky, who missed the one-on-one foul, thought the game was over but Sternell again ruled that Serra had another second left in the game and gave the Eagles another shot which failed when Bob Pikula’s 66-foot desperation shot fell short.Mon Valley invades North on Friday and ends the 1965-66 season at South Hills Catholic on Monday.
