The Snyder (Texas) Daily News, Sun., Feb. 22, 1959 5Knockouts InGG PlentifulFORT WORTH (AP)-A siring of knockouts, and a victory by defending champion Gilbert Martinez of Galveston, featured the wild-swinging, free-wheeling state golden gloves quarter-finals Saturday night.Manny Perez of Amarillo hit Calvin Thompson of Sherman with one steaming left hook in the first round of their lightweight bout. Thompson staggered but came back, only to run into another that put him down for the count.Minutes later Richard Marquez of San Antonio dropped Charles Randal] of Fort Worth in the first round with a left hook. In the second round the San Antonio lightweight battered Randall helpless with a series of rights and lefts to the head. The referee itopped it.Gilbert Martinez of Galveston, defending state champion, won his quarterfinal bout from Angelo Rosendo of Amarillo with a strong right hook and a cool head. Rosendo took a severe working over from the left of Martinez, but kept coming back with savage flurries. He was staggered a couple of times by Martinez’ booming punches, but he managed totbloody the Galveston sharpie's nose and drew the cheers of the crowd.Leonard Smith of Fort Worth scored the first knockout of the night as he dropped Neill Rayford of Tyler with a crushing right hand in the first round. Smith had driven Rayford back into a corner and landed the right amid a flurry of blows. Rayford fell to the canvas but was on his feet at the count of nine. The referee refused to let him go on. however, despite Rayford’s protests.In the flyweight division. Anulfo Torres of Brownsville lost his mouthpiece in a slugging match but earned the nod over Charles Car am of Fort Worth.Humberto Barrera of Corpus Christi. a stylish boxer, used his left to good effect to outpoint Louis Murillo of Austin.Steve Freeman of Houston, a classy boxer, lost a tremendously unpopular decision to Tony Lue-anos in the flywdght division.Enrique Gonzales of Corpus Christi gave Lon McMillin of Abilene a terrific pounding for two and a half rounds before the referee stopped the slugfest and awarded it to Gonzales on a TKO. iTonight’s results:
