Pioneer QuintSpills Tigers 49 to 39foitirthilitsoanfirtfi:toBy DICK MCKfl' LEHI — The Lehl Pioneers threw thfe Alpine loop casaba scramble into a three'* for all by out-scoring the erratic Lincoln Tigers Friday night at Lehl 40-39.By dropping the once high riding Tigers, who have booted twoleague games In a row since their non-league debacle at Carbon, the purple shlrted Pioneers have created a three-way hassle—the third party being the American Fork Cavemen, who did everything but dismember the BV Wildcats in ‘the field house Friday night. The offensive spark for Coach Lars Peterson’s Lehi five was Boyd Wathen, the boy with the 30-acre stride. His deadeye firing from in and around the foul circle brought him seven field goals in addition to a perfect five for five via the charity route. Another one of the real stars for the Lehians was lanky Brent Dorton, only a sophomore. His brilliant backboard and defensive play all over the court kept the Pioneers from splitting at the seams on numerous occasions.Lehl's Anderson Initiated the scoring with a hook shot under the basket. Jim Pyne tipped one in to tie it up 2-2. With less than 2 minutes left in the first period, Carl Rowley laid one in to again knot the count at 6-6. Mainly on Wathen’s seven points, the Pioneers pulled away to a 13-8 first quarter lead. With Anderson leading the way, Lehl grabbed to a 27-18 half time margin.Coach Evan Baugh’s Tigers came roaring back in the third quarter with a very effective, while it was employed, full court press that more than baffled the Pioneers. On several occasions they were unable to get the bait over the 10 second line. With Rowley leading the comeback with six points, Lincoln narrowed the lead to 31-28 and 34-30 before the Pioneers were able to weather the attack. The fourth quarter was a foul stricken session with the Tigers fighting desperately to gain control of the ball. Rowley’s hard driving gave him seven of the nine points tallied by the Lincoln team in the final eight minutes. Jim Pyne, one of Coach Baugh’s scoring stalwarts, was pretty well bottled up in his attempts to drive down the middle for Iay-ins, and this stoppage did much to spell the difference in the ball game.Lee Fox, a fairly recent addition fl to Coach Peterson's starting line- a up, scored the last six points for a Lehi and played a good all-around £ game. Johnson also sparkled in his under the basket play, tying up the ball repeatedly.Lincoln's Junior varsity fought an uphill battle all the way to finally gain a 48-48 tie with the Pioneers with two and a halfminutes remaining in the ballgame. An effective ball control game brought the Tiges out on top 52-50 with Hard'ng getting 12 points for the winners. Price and Evans shared game honors with 15 each for Lehi. The small fry Pioneers nave yet to win a game this year.
