In fact, measures already have been taken to bring thelegislators’ attention to the scheme andhave a stop put to it.The Hammond sportsmen who have been taking trips to the Kankakee! river every spring, are up in arms over the report that their favorite game reserve is to be despoiled by Chicago sportsmen. The tyranny of the owners of the Toleston club is still fresh in the memory c f local sports and they will do all in their power to prevent the necessity of having to cope with a similar situation at the Kankakee hunting grounds.The Diana club is reported to be ono of the richest in the country and yesterday closed the lease with the Indiana Land company of Ligonier, Ind., operated by the Strauss syndicate. This tract of 23,000 acres is along the banks of the Kankakee river, taking in the entire north ends of Jasper and Newton counties. Indiana hunters insist that Indiana should he for thorp and not for hunters of a foreign state., Hence the indignation.The land was purchased by the Strauss syndicate several years ago from Kelson Morris wit km view ofselling It as farm lands, but after diligent effort to drain it the game preserve Idea was brought forth.Feeling is so strong against themovement of Illinois sportsmen coming into Indiana and monopolizing tho sport that open threats are being made that it will be another onse similar to the Toleston club, another Chicago Club that owns the hunting right on Calumet marsh. This marsh has been thescene of many murders during past—* •years, brought about by preachers who entered upon the leased property lrt search of game. So eager are the club members for game that they employ watchmen and in the ease of the Toles-ton club innocent sportsmen were shotdown and their bodies picked up laterin the marsh.Sportsmen in Hammond, LaPorte, Valparaiso, Crown Point, MichiganCity, South Bend and in fact all thoOar Vcities in the northern section of Indiana near by the famous Kankakeemarsh are banding together and will make a finish fight of the matter, and propose if the state legislature willlend its assistance to drive the foreign hunter from the state, who now', under the present game preserve arrangement, holds the whip hand over thehoosier.The conditions this year point to the I best season for hunting in a number of years past. The water is high,especially on tho preserve just acquired by the Diana club, owing to the erection of a huge dike on the north side of the river, which throws the water in great torrents onto syndicatelands.
