Titans grab championshipVictory at La Crosse gives Oshkosh first title since ’85BY STEVE LYLESAdvance-Titan ReporterIt’s all theirs.The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh women’s basketball team showed they wanted no part of sharing the conference title by winning it outright in a 78-64 victory at UW La Crosse Wednesday night.“We came to play tonight, and we really had to,” Oshkosh Coach Kathi Bennett said. “Our half court defense won it for us, and we got some real balance on offense.”The Titans, ranked 11th among NCAA Division III schools, moved their record to 19-4 overall and 13-2 in WWIAC play, capturing theirfirst conference title since 1985.‘Tm very happy and proud of everyone” Bennett said. “It’s agreat feeling”The road to victory was hardly a cakewalk. After taking a 36-33 half-time lead, the Titans saw La Crosse narrow that margin to 38-37 just a minute into the second half.Tricia Betthauser got the Titans rolling soon after, by hitting a three-pointer, igniting a 9-0 Oshkosh run. From there the Eagles could get no closer than four points down.Senior Maurya McClintock held game-high honors in scoring and rebounding with 18 points and 13 boards. Lisa Kirchenwiiz, who played sparingly against Stout and missed the trip to Superior last week due to the flu, had 16 points while Betlhaiiser had 13 points and Lori Bakhaus 10.The Titans had clinched a share of the conference title with a pair of victories this past weekend over Stout and Superior.Against Stout last Friday in Albee Hall, the Titans opened up the first half with a 1^-4 scoring run and came out firing again with an 18-4 scoring run to start the second half en route to an 84-59 victory.“I was worried,” Bennett said. “I thought the game would go down to the wire, but we came out the second half and did a really nice job.Leading the way for Oshkosh were McClintock, who had a team high 21 points and game high 16 rebounds and guard Amy Wing contributing 16 points, seven assists and five steals.On Saturday the Titans traveled to Superior, picking up a 66-45 victory.With Kirchenwitz out the Titans needed someone to contribute a little extra. Enter McClintock and Jessie Hoinacki, who made her first start of the season.McClintock scored a game high 19 points while pulling down nine, rebounds. Hoinacki, a freshman who has provided the Titans with steady play ofr the bench, picked up nine points, while Paige Larson, scored 12 and Amy Wing 11.“Jessie had to come in and play well defensively and help us scpre ” Bennett said. “Maurya is a stabilizer and very consistent. She had to shoulder a lot of the scoring and did it very nicely.“We did enough to win the game and that’s what counted,” Bennett said. I was very happy about that.uOshkosh will conclude its regular season Saturday when Plaltev-ille visits Albee Hall at 5 p.m.“They’re not a real quick team so 1 think we can run against them, Bennett said. They play good half court defense and can shoot some threes.
