Stoughton storms to victoryBy Tom Miller Gazette StaffJanesville Parker’s John Harrington qualified for the WIAA state wrestling tournament with a second-place finish at 185 in the Class A Janesville Sectional Saturday, but overall, the news was dismal for the two Janesville schools.Stoughton, meanwhile, qualified seven wrestlers for the state meet, which starts Thursday at 4:30 p.m., en route to the sectional team title. The Vikings, defending Class A state champs, rolled up 167l/2 points, outdistancing runner-up Monroe by 77 points. Parker, the Big Eight Conference and regional champions, finished ninth with 32‘/2 points, with Craig 10th with 31.Delavan-Darien finished sixth with 40 points Saturday, with Fort Atkinson seventh and Jefferson eighth. Milton was llth and Beloit Memorial was last in the 15-team field.Harrington was the lone Janesville state qualifier. He lost in the 185-pound title match to Pat Zimmerman of Monroe, 1-0. The top two finishers in each weight class qualified for state.Harrington, now 27-5-1, won two matches, including a 7-0 decision against Fort’s Greg Fuller (27-5-1), to advance to the title match.* ‘Against Fuller, he dug down deep inside and beat somebody that is a real fine wrestler,” Parker coach Ron Cramer said.Harrington now has met Zimmerman three times and has won one of those, with all three matches decided by a point.“He was so strong and I had problems moving him,” Harrington said of the title match. “I was trying to outquick him, but when I got behind, 1-0, I was trying to do anything I could. I was going for things, but he was being very careful.”None of the other nine Parker sectional qualifiers, nor the five Craig qualifiers, managed better than a third-place finish. Earning third-place finishes were Parker’s Mike Wright (25-5) at 112; Craig’s John Rice (26-8) at 119, and Craig’s Mike Rinehart (17-2) at 145.Rice advanced to the championship match at 119 with two wins.but then was pinned by Stoughton’s amazing freshman Brett Stubblefield (27-1-1) and then lost a 9-6 decision to Salem Central’s Brian Marse in the wrestleback.Rinehart, who missed two months of the season with a knee injury, won his first match, then lost to Don Oldani of Kenosha Bradford, 8-2. He then defeated Lenny Gums of Salem Central for third place.Delavan-Darien qualified two wrestlers—junior Bob Gleiter (23-6-0) at 132, and senior Matt Young (21-8-0) at 167.
