Petulla’s trey sinks KnightsBill Petulla’s 35-foot desperation jump shot with four seconds remaining provided the visiting Oil City boys’ basketball team with a 60-57 Tri-County Athletic Conference Division I victory over Franklin on Friday night.By virtue of the victory, Oil City swept a home-and-home season series from Franklin for the first time in recent memory. On Feb. 2, the Oilers claimed a 51-46 homecourt triumph over the Knights.Petulla’s heroics culminated a furious second-half comeback bid by the Oilers of coach Dan Fry. Franklin led the contest 19-17 after the opening period and 39-33 at the intermission, but the Oilers rallied to take a 47-45 lead at the third-quarter turn by limiting Franklin to just six third-period points.The 3-pointer by Petulla -the Oilers’ lone senior starter -was one of a season-best seven scored in the contest by Oil City (10-9 overall, 3-3 in the TCAC), as Mike Eckert canned a trio of treys.Mike Koziara led Oil Citywith a game-high 19-point performance, while John Judy and Eckert contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively. Judy tallied a pair of treys.Matt Koziara led Franklin (9-11, 3-3) with 13 markers, while frosh Nate Keith added a dozen points and senior Casey Han-cox chipped in with 10 markers for coach Butch Welker.Franklin tallied half-dozen more field goals than the Oilers but did not convert a single 3-pointer. Oil City also outscored the Knights from the charity stripe by a 13-5 margin.Franklin, which has lost five of its last seven outings and four of its last five, hosts Cranberry today at 7:30 p.m. in a TCAC interdivisional battle, while Oil City welcomes Titusville on Tuesday evening in a Division I encounter.Steve Witherup’s game-high 17 points and 14 markers from Dan Gardner led Franklin to a 47-29 rout of Oil City in the junior varsity preliminary contest.
