Germany ’ s prote st rejected by boardMERIBEL, France (CP) — Germany lost to Canada for the second time in two days at the Olympic hockey tournament Wednesday night. This time the score was 17-1 in the boardroom. The directorate of the International Ice Hockey Federation rejected a protest filed by Germany over Canada’s 4-3 shootout win Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the medal round. The only country to vote in favor of the protest was Germany in the 90-minute meeting.“It was (almost) unanimous that the protest would not be upheld,” said Canadian delegate Gordon Renwick of Toronto. “There wasn’t too much room for Germany to move.”Canada won the exciting shootout during the second round of penalty shots following a 10-minute overtime period. Eric Lindros shot first in the second round and scored. The German shooter was stopped.Shootout rules stipulate theorder of shooting must change in the second round. Canada shot first in both rounds.“The rule says that once the puck is put back in play, there’s no way that goal (Lindros) can be changed,” Renwick said. “It was a technical mistake by the referee.“The goal stands. They could have protested after Lindros scored, until they took the puck from centre ice. No one thought of it until after the game, so the goal has to stand.”Canada meets Czechoslovakia in the semifinals Friday.Renwick said he doesn’t expect Finnish referee Seppo Makela to be reprimanded because “it was a technical mistake.”The Germans based their protest on the fact they should have shot first in the second round of the shootout.“If anything can be found to question, it’s the referee,” said Murray Costello, president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and HHF official.
