By DAVE RAMSAYThe Dauphin invitational basketball tournament gave a good indictation of who to watch in the provincial B championships to be held here in March.The Killarney Raiders dominated the girls’ competition, easily winning the chain while the Dauphin Clippers had an easy time winning the boys’ side.Dauphin, SwanValley, Flin Flon and Russell competed in the boys’ competition and Dauphin, Killarney, Swan River and Flin Flon played in the girls’competition* VKillarney, whose only defeats this year have come from highly ranked A school teams, were led by the scoring ofDiane Kuipers and Catherina Woods. Theydefeated Flin Flon 59-28 in the championship game. Kuipers picked up 22 points in the contest, including 14 in the first half, while Woods had 16. Both players sat out much of the second half after Killarne built up a 29-12 at haltime lead.Killarney reached the final by beating Swar Valley 73-34. Kuipers scored 21 points in that game.The Dauphin Clipper: had just as easy a timlt; winning the boys’ com petition. They starte* out with a an 88-43 vie tory over the Russel I Raiders. In the final they trounced Swai Valley 90-47. Coach Larry McDougall sail the Clippers pueverything together ii the final. He was im pressed with their speeand hustle in the cor test,Dauphin started out strong in the contest, leading 25-9 at the end of the first quarter and 46-23 at the half. McDougall substituted freely throughout the game as his first-string placers totally dominated Swan Valley. He went to* his bench to keep the score down during much of the second naif. He was also happy with the play ofhis second-stringers who more than their own duringthe contest.Dauphin increasedBrian Belinsky grabs rebound against Swan Valleytheir lead to 70-37 at the end of the third quarter. Late in the fourthquarter Swan Valley used a stall to keep thescore under 100.Brian Smith led the ipers with 22 points ana Gerald Chernicki had 12. Rob Wiebes had 14 points for Swan.In their win againstRussell, the Clippers were led by Smith with12 pointl^/'. • ¥' :The Clippers won theconsolation final ingirls’ competition defeating Flin Flon 90-51. The game was close in the first half with Dauphin ahead41-35 but Swan Valley got into foul trouble. Inthe second half,Dauphin took total con-fouls. However, they hurt Swan Valley a bitmore as four of theireight players fouled out. Swan Valley played part of the fourth quarter with only four players.one starter and played four against four.Coach Tom MacNair said their loss against Flin Flon may have had something to do with his absense from the teamlP ^the last quarter with an extra player but as the trol outscoring their op- score started to get outjMonpP^,i;'A:f.The game got a bit out Cathy Lasack had 16' paints for the Clippers.of hand, they removedDauphin played part of for the last week.
