Defeat Shippensburg 69-45, Before CapacityCrowc| LastTom Cross, towering Negro center of the Waynesbpro - Mont Alto Tornado, established a new all-time South Penn* Conference basketball scoring record at Shippensburg last night.Dave Rhone’s Little Tornado came froni behind in the last minute and a half to win the Jayvee contest 51-47.Cross brpk© the existing record and set a new high as he paced the Tornado to a 69-45 victory over the Shippe|nsburg Greyhounds before a capacity crowd.SCORES 26 POINTSGoing into last night’s game with 266 points, 12 off the 278 all-time high set last season by Fred Evans, Hershey, Cross collected a grand total of 26 points last night.Victory SmileTom Cross, 6:07 pivot of the Way-nesboro-Mont Alto Tornado, set a new South Penn Conference scoring record last night netting 26 points against the Shippensburg Greyhounds. Cross now has a total of 292 points in 13 league contests. He has a season total of 411 points for 18 games surpassing the airtime school mark established by Peg Gerhart during the 1920-21 season under the late P. ij. Probst. Gerhart that season had 315.It was exactly 9:04 p.m. last night when Cross flipped a charity toss through the hoop for his 279tli point and a new record.Cross collected nine points in the initial period ^as the Tornado took a 19-12 lead., Then at 3:45 of the second period Dick Angle, Greyhound pivot, fouled Tom. That shot tied the record at 278.Thirty-five seconds later Angle was caught fouling again and Cross stepped to ' the 15-foot mark and dropped in the point that gave him thte record.CROSS IS CHEEREDImmediately Waynesboro called time out. As Tom loped to the bench, fans came streaming out of the stands to congratulate him. The crowd stood, applauded and cheered the feat.Through the first period and until the time he broke the record it was evident Cross was under terrific pressure. Once the pressure was off h§ became his old self. -Cross had nine goals for 15 tries letst night. PiWard had 3-12, Hartle 3-J9, Shade 1-6, and Funk 1-1.The Tornadomen hit 33 per cent of their 61 shots last night. Several times head Coach Harry Pure cleared the bench giving the reserves almost as much time to play aS the regulars.HAS LOCAL RECORDi Cross already has the all-time record for Waynesboro High School with 4}1 points in 18 games.He has bettered the mark of “Peg” Gerhart, who starred underEveningthe late P. Probst, and posted a mark of 315 during the 1920-21 seasi.The Tornado had little trouble with the Shippensburg zone with Provard, Hartle and Funk feeding Tom Cross under the hoop.Cross had 24 rebounds during the course of the contest which determined control of the contest.The junior varsity contest provided the thrills.Trailing until the last minute and a half the Little Tornado moved out in front and hung tenaciously to its slim lead while Shippensburg blew a half dozen chances at the foul line.Bob Shryock and Dean Wolff set the pace for the Rhonemen. Shryock had six assists working the ball into Wolff and Allie Kohler.
