Jacks matmen battle Fertile in opening round of region tourneyby JIM CARRINGTON The Bemidji Lumberjacks wrestling team will shoot for its 11th Region 8 wrestling title when it takes on potent Fertile at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Bagley. At the same time, Crookston and Greenbush will square off in the other semifinal. The title match will be at 7:30.This will mark the first time that the region title has been determined on a full team basis with the four district winners entering full teams against each other. The individual tournament will be conducted Saturday at Bagley with no team trophy given. The winning team tomorrow and the 12 winners Saturday will move on to the state meet next week. For all intents, the regin championship should hinge on the Bemidji-Fertile match. The Falcons, second rated in the state, were 13-0 on the season, won the Pine to Prairie and Fertile Invitational tournaments handily and beat Mahnomen by 31 points in the District 30 tournament, gaining six championships.Bemidji was 7-5 against a high class schedule, won the Northwest Conference title in a landslide and finished third at the Foley Invitational and fourth at the Brainerd meet.Greenbush again dominated the District 32 meet, winning eight titles Doug Dahl'sTigers were 7-5 this season, finishing second at the Fertile and Park Rapids tournaments and fifth at the Little Falls meet.Crookston was a surprise winner in District 31 after a weak 2-9-1 season’s mark, a seventh place finish at Fertile and last at Park Rapids and the Northwest Conference meets. Greenbush is a heavy favorite to gain the finals. Greenbush beat Crookston 37-11 during the year while Fertile spilled Greenbush 29-18 though each won six matches. Bemidji and Fertile have not met nor have Greenbush and Bemidji. The Jacks will match their squad balance against Fer-tile’s outstanding sextet of senior stars and hope for the best. Bemidji will almost have to win the first three bouts and the last three, hoping for some poins among them to counterbalance Fertile’s strength in the middle weights.Tourney changeOne change in the new setup is that coaches may joggle their lineups as they see fit and are not bound to the alignment they used in the district meets. This will find Dwight Lewis going back into the Bemidji lineup at 105 with Nestle Grimes and Gary Stay moving up to 112 and 119 and Ed Henry coming out. The Jacks could also juggle at the top depending on what lineup Fertile sends to the mats. Bemidji hopes to get winsfrom Tom and Nestle Grimes and Lewis at the bottom end, Gerry Oman, Craig Newby and Mark Wilcox at the top and include two to four pins among those wins.Fertile’s solid six begins with Leon Sulerud at 119 and goes with Darrell Larson at 126, Jeff Dale at 132, Don Morvig at 138, Mark Langved at 145 and state champ Kevin Lindberg at 155.Region champ Dave Horgeshimer could go in at 132 or 138, however, with the others moving up a weight. Bemidji will counter with Stay at 119, Steve Hendricks at 126, Mike Schmitt 132, DougZarling 138, Mark Erhart 145 and Kevin Okerman at 155.If Fertile stays down, Chris Wahlin will be the ‘67 pounder, Dave Broden at 180 and Leroy Halstad at heavyweight. The latter pair are also interchangeable. Brad Mosher. Kevin Oien and Marlin Halstad will be in the lower weights.Sulerud, Larson, Dale and Lindberg are undefeated. Morvig has lost once and Langved twice. For the Jacks Nestle Grimes in unbeaten. Wilcox 20-2 and Tom Grimes 22-3 for the best marks. We reserve the right to limit quantit*e Advertised prices reflect Price OW On Label *hen ao^cabieTWO BLOCKS EAST OF* *IGA TABLERITE fRESHF*ground.BEEF L.V|Ground Beef ____COUNTRY STYLESPARE RIBSPORK LOIN ROASTlblb69'69t
