ROBERT GRIFFINNew Class Gives Fighters ChanceRobert Griffin just wanted to got off the streets and do something.Now he’s sending others ontothe street.The Irvin High School sophomore is one of the favorites in the new light flyweight division of the Golden Gloves tournament, which will be held Thursday and Friday at the El Paso Coliseum.“I decided to go into boxing because I didn’t want to sit around and waste my time doing nothing,” remarked Grif-fim“I FIRST took it for self defense. I enjoy boxing. I like to fight and still remain friends with the people after we get out of the ring.”If it weren’t for a change in procedure, Griffin would have had to enter his first GoldenGloves tournament in the 106-112 pound flyweight division.“There were so many kids that were 104 pounds and under,” remarked Golden Gloves promoter Jake Martinez, “that had to box in the heavier class, that a new division was set up. The new division is in all levels of competition.* *GRIFFIN HAS a 5-5-1 record.He was runnerup recently withthe USA team in Shreveport, La. in an AAU tournament. He trains 10-12 hours each week, under coach Louie Carrillo, at Nations-Tobin Center.“It’s hard to pick the fight game up in one year like Robert has,” said Carrillo. “Robert is really dedicated. He trains very hard.”Carrillo feels that Griffin’s main competition will comefrom Ricardo Loeza of Plaza Pharmacy.“They are the same kind of boxer,” Carrillo added “They like to jab and move around.They know what they are doing and are classey boxers.
