In Two YearsBy LEN-TAYLORGRENOBLE (Special) - Czechoslovakia has definitely accepted a Canadian Amateur Hockey Association invitation to compete in the third annual Winnipeg International Hockey Tournament next season, secretary-manager Gordon Juckes said following a meeting of the World Ice Hockey Federation. This will probably ensure the presence ofa Soviet team of nationalplayers and possibly of a selected'club from Sweden toround out to field,But to world iataatioualleague which Canada has beenpromoting for teams from Canada, the United Sttes,Sweden, Russia and Czechos-lovakia is at least a year way, in Juckes* opinion.Juckes and CAHA president Fred Page of Vancouver presented the proposal for the international league to world federation delegates here Friday more as a matter of information thandecision.“Russia and Czechoslovakia accept the proposal in principle/’ Juckes said, “But they have league commitmentswhich make it impossible forthem to start next year. Thatmeans the league is a yearmy, 1969-70 iustcad of liftSweden is interested, saidJuckes, but the Swedes will stayout for a year or two to see how things go. They feel the facttheir players work and play for senior clubs in leagues it is then difficult to compete. Such an international schedule would draw them away from club matches and hurt the leagues. The CAHA proposal offered yesterday was modified to bring in one team .from each country instead of two, since the Russians and the Czechs did not wish to play two teams. The Canadian suggest that the teams travel once across theocean, playing three games with each rival team, That wouldmean nine home and nine any games in to first season oloperation.President Page said, that theSoviets were unable to commit themselves to quite a few thingsFATHER BAUER .. . At Crossroadsin this meeting. “We arranged to play overseas in Russia in talks around the table. They want our suggestion they play in Winnipeg submitted in wilting so thev can consider it.”Canada, at any rate, is prepared to send a selected team from its two national squads to play in Czechoslovakia and Russia in late October and early November.Juckes said the team would compete in a Czech tournamentin Prague before going to Russia,This tournament will celebrate (lie ill anniversaryhockey in Czechoslovakia andthe Canadian officials saidteam would be proud to partici-pate.In reciprocation the Czechs have agreed to play in Winnipeg, a decision which is expected to confirm the presence of the Russians, particularly after the surprise Czech win over Russia Thursday night.Rev. David Bauer, special adviser to the Canadian national team and the man responsible for setting up the squad in itspresent form, like Jukes, felt the Canadian team has reached acrossroads. We set up the national teamconcept four years ago on a four-year program, Father Bauersaid.“We have gone throughand it is successful Now we must plan ahead“The people belli to found-ation were primarily.concernedwith an Olympic medal. Well,we’ve got a medal. Our system does work.”to whether we will continue to develop.”Father Bauer said the team and the CAHA will conduct a drive for financial support as soon as the team returns to Canada.“The way they have distinguished themselves at theOlympics here should have abearing on the support whichthe people will give to theCanadian Hockey Federation, can't go on living to mouth year after said.
