Thursday, February 15, 1979 THE MARION SENTINEL Page 7teet-nip)ES3the ad theif-19lustangs and the i 21-9tier Lions hile Suehad 4.urt with ed shots.No.Prairie HandsIndians First LossFriday night was the final dual meet for two outstanding wrestling teams, as No. 2 rated Prairie hosted the Marion Indians.At 98 pounds Steve Brighi was deci-sioned 9-0 by Prairie’s Scott Penrod.But Greg Hebert put the Indians on the scoreboard by taking a 5-3 lead in the first period and riding his man the entire second.Prairie JV Matmen Hand Marion 1st LossOn Friday, the Marion Junior Varsity wrestling team suffered its only loss of the season at the Lands of the Prairie Hawks, 32-24.For the Indians, 105 pounder Craig Canavan received a forfeit and he was followed by 119 pounder Ross Kent, who won impressively, 10-1, over a very good wrestler.At 132, freshmen Curt Hall tied a Prairie wrestler who had wrestled varsity in several meets.Another winner for Marion was Vaughn Klopfenstein, who pinned his opponent in 3:35.Finally, heavyweight Jim Benson pinned his way to victory in 1:37.Wrestlers defeated for Marion were Jon Foege 7-4, Lindsey Butterfield 9-3, Todd Turner pinned, Jeff Griffin 10-4, Ed Godar pinned, Mark Johnson pinned and Dave Decker 10-8.Even though the Indians lost, the year was a tremendous success and many of the JV wrestlers will fit in well, into next year’s varsity lineup, explained Coach Dave Messerli.Some of the wrestlers have shown tremendous improvement this year and have recorded extremely good records.Some of the top JV records were;Jon Foege (9-3), Craig Canavan (11-2), Lindsey Butterfield (10-1), RossKent (19-1), Vaughn Klopfenstein (14-5) and Dave Decker (12-1).Greg Hoffa sent Marion into the lead by dominating his man 13-5 at 112. The superior decision came mainly from Hoffa's ability to turn Prairie's Mark Hof-master to his back four times.At 119, Barry Davis, Prairie’s state champion from last year, overwhelmed Steve Armstrong, 18-2, leaving the team score 7-9.Pat Freilinger dropped an exceptionally close match to Prairie’s Kevin Brown at 126. Behind 7-2 in the third 'period, Freilinger escaped and took Brown down. As the period ended, the Marion grap-pler had just started to turn his man to his back.The next four weight classes went to Prairie and put the chance of winning out of reach for the Indians.At 132, Robbie Bolyard was pinned by Dale Crozier. Dave Rae, wrestling at 138, was pinned by Doug Penrod.Ken Waters was decisioned by Statechamp Jim Zalesky 13-2 at 145, and Mark Klopfenstein was pinned in the 3rd period by Larry Zalesky.Joe Ickes dominated Dennis Heintz of Prairie in the 167-pound match-up. Ickes took his man down three times and rolled him to his back twice on his way to a 18-2 super superior decision.Jerry Nibeck, Marion's 185-pounder drew with Prairie's Larry Rammelsburg 1-1.The Indians collected a fall at heavyweight, as Mike Woodward took a 9-3 lead before pinning Chuck Reid in 5:31.The final score read the Hawks 36-20. The varsity closed out their dual season 11-1.Wrestling before the varsity meet were five extras:112 lbs. Kevin Thomas (M) pinned Lar ry Kelcheii 1:42 126 lbs. Karl Rauc (M) was pinned by Jeff Jilek 5:22 132 lbs. Randy smith (M) was decisioned by Sam Selzer 9-4132 lbs. Roland Appleby (M) pinnedBob Miller 5:37 145 lbs. John Drewer (M) was pinned by Jim Porter 2:29.
