minutes e box— with Lanny GareEditor's note: Each week University of New Hampshire forward Lanny Gare discusses topics related to the team with Herald sports writer Roger Brown.UIt wasn't a pleasant bus ride home after our 5-2 loss at Providence last Sunday. It usually isn't after a loss — especially after a disappointing loss like that. Bus trips back from road games are like night and day depending on whether you win or lose.... You hear about those big football programs and their players getting new cars from the boosters -— that's definitely not going on with our team. There are no Hummers. The real stories are the boats some of our players drive. (Patrick) Foley and (Steve) Saviano have to dock the cars they drive any time they take them somewhere. When Saviano goes home to Reading he's got to stop halfway to fill up the tank. ... When teams play the trap against us it definitely slows us down because we're an offensive-minded team. Anything to disrupt our flow or stop us from picking up speed going into the attacking zone is going to slow us down. The easiest thing to do against the trap is dump the puck in, and that’s what we've been working on. If guys are intense on the forecheck it’s going to work. The trap is boring, it's not great to watch and it makes the games sloppy, but it’s effective. ... I like to golf when I’m at home (Vernon, British Columbia) in the offseason. I also love going to the beach. Vernon is a hot, dry place and me and some of my buddies call ourselves the Vernon tanning team. I live near Lake Okanagan, which is where The Ogopogo (Canada’s version of the Loch Ness Monster) lives. We live kind of on a hill and from the porch you can see the whole lake. I don't know if that thing is real, but I’ve seen some things that make me do a double take. When you're in the water you try not to think that it could be swimming beneath you.... I think the teams that have the best chance to win the national championship are from the WCHA and Hockey East. Colorado College is having a great season. My dad is a scout for the Rangers and he watched them play North Dakota and said they look very good. Denver looked all right when we were out there. If I couidn't pick UNH, I’d probably go with CC. North Dakota or Maine. Cornell is probably better than it was last year and a team like that always has a chance because they're very sound defensively and they have a great goalie. Cornell is a team that doesn’t get much consideration because they’re in the ECAC, but I'd say they’re a darkhorse. ... I’d have to say Scott Hanson is my favorite Hockey East referee. I don’t even mind Conrad Hache. He got off on the wrong foot with our team and our fans, but the thing I like about him is he doesn't take anything from anyone. He gave Jack Parker a bench minor when we played BU and I think he’s a coach that intimidates a lot of referees. ... If I could watch a fight between any two Hockey East players I'd pick Pat Foley and Josh Reed, my friend from Lowell. I've seen fight tapes of Foley from junior hockey and he can definitely throw punches. I played junior hockey with Josh and he’s a real heavyweight. He’s definitely a tough kid. Foley has those big meat hooks for fists. That would be a good matchup. ... This is an important weekend for Northeastern because they’reonly one point up on Lowell. I'm sure they'd be thrilled with a split. We’ve had trouble at Matthews Arena so they’ve got that going for them. I don’t think I’ve won at Northeastern since I’ve been here. We’ve had some good practices and I think the team you see against Northeastern will be different from the one you saw against Providence.
