Sabers Take 13 A AUAKMONT — With one Section 13AA Kamo remaining, the Ford City Sabers crushed the Rivewiew Haiders here last night, 62-50, to lock SpruMdale out of the league championship race Even 1f the Dynamos hadn't been upset by Apollo-Ridge, 71 70, last night. Ford City's llth Victory without a section loss would have made it impossible for Springdale to challenge the league-leading Sabers for the section banner Surprisingly. Ford City head Coach Mark Fruehan low keyed his third section title in nineyears“It was kind of a down game,” said Fruehan We were really tight tonight, but understandably so since it meant taking the sec tion. I'm not real excited Our day for excitement will come Maybe later Last year we got excited too early Last year’s excitement ended in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs when Swissvale's St Anselm High School stopped Ford City’s postseason bid at the first game Hampered last year by a severe cut on Joe Kromka’s shooting hand and an ill Brian Russell, Fruehan has become leary of the Sabers celebrating too early ThriKighout the 1978-79 season he has looked forward to his squad peaking just at playoff time It seems his wish may well be granted this vearw iJoe Minarcin topped his Saber teammates in both scoring and rebounding last night Minarcin canned 20 points and swept down 10 rebounds against the Raiders Though the rest of the team may have beentight, and may have played that way. Minarcin, along with Mike Nortrup, showed a calm under pressure that should serve the Sabers well cometjhe playoffsWhile Minarcin was the top point getter, Nortrup showed the least shooting error for the Sabers He hit four of five field goals for 80 percent accuracy from the floor ana 100 percent at the tree throw line with two of two foul shots converted for 10 points Minarcin wasn’t far behind in field goal accuracy with 72 percent (eight of 11). but fell way below his usual 80 percent regularity at the line totting just 44 percent (four of nine).Joining Nortrup. who also had five rebounds, and Minarcin in double figures were Joe Kromka with 12 points and Brian Hobaugh and Greg Rousseau with 10 points each.Hobaugh led Ford City in assists with seven and also took down seven rebounds Kromka had five assists and three rebounds and Rousseau notched two assists and four reboundsFord City outrebounded Riverview, 30 to 27, and had an unusually low turnover rate with 10 throughout the course of the game Overall, the Sabers hit 53 percent of their fieldgoals (26 of 49) and 40 percent of their freethrows lt;10 of 25).‘it was our poorest night at the foul line, noted Fruehan Riverview, led by John Young and Dan Patterson with 15 points each, hit 35 percent from the field (21 of 60* and 40 percent from the line'eight of 20).I^ast night’s win moves Ford City's undefeated section play streak to 31 games The Sabers have won 11 this year. 12 last year and seven the preceeding year Friday, Ford City will attempt to break last year's record of 21 wins in a season with a victory over Kittanning on 'he Sabers’ home courtIt's always a different game with Kittanning, noted Fruehan When they meet you. you don’t know what will happen But I feel no matter what comes up, we’ll be ready for themWeil just do our normal things For the past three years, normal has meant winning for the Sabers, especially on their owncourtIn the jayvee contest.
